About Padstow
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow last autumn – those golden leaves swirling around like confetti as we trundled along the A39, the kids buzzing in the back about pasties and pasties (we’d promised one each from the bakery). It was mid-October, that sweet spot where Cornwall’s still got a bit of warmth but the crowds have buggered off, leaving the roads blissfully quiet. Except for our little mishap: halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel, convinced we’d end up in a hedge. A quick u-turn and a shared eye-roll later, we were back on track, laughing about how holidays always start with a comedy of errors.

Pulling into Padstow just as the sun dipped low over the River Camel, I felt that proper tingle of anticipation – you know, the one where you imagine cosy evenings ahead while the sea air nips at your cheeks. First impressions? Spot on. It’s a bright second-floor duplex apartment plonked right near the beach and that gorgeous river, perfect for our lot with the dog in tow. Up the stairs we climbed (good job we’d packed light), and stepping inside was like a warm hug: open-plan kitchen, dining spot for six, and a sitting area that just invited you to flop down. The kitchen had everything – I whipped up a stew that night with local spuds and cider from the offy, and we ate like kings while the pup snoozed by the heater.

Autumn shaped the whole trip in the best way. Mornings started crisp and misty, the Camel estuary shrouded in fog that burned off to reveal seals basking on the sands at low tide. We’d wander down to the harbour, grabbing steaming sausage rolls from Stein’s bakery – none of that summer scrum, just us and a handful of locals nodding hellos. The light was magical, all soft golds and russets painting the fishing boats, and the sea had that moody Atlantic swell that makes you feel alive. One afternoon, we hit the Camel Trail on bikes (hired from right by the property), pedalling through tunnels of turning leaves towards Rock – the trail’s flat and easy, but that autumn chill had us layering up and stopping for hot chocolate at a pop-up van. Blimey, it was bracing, but the views across the water? Unbeatable.

Evenings were pure hygge. With the days shortening fast, we’d light the fire (well, the electric one – safety first) and play board games till the kids conked out. I had a quiet moment one night, staring out at the darkening sky, thinking how this time of year strips holidays back to basics – no tan lines or sunburn, just family, food, and that fresh coastal nip reminding you to savour it. We squeezed in a dog-friendly beach walk at Trevone Bay, crunching over pebbles under slate-grey clouds that threatened rain but held off, and a clotted cream tea at a café overlooking the estuary, the scones still warm despite the breeze.

Padstow in autumn? It’s like the place whispers secrets only off-season visitors hear. No regrets about dodging summer – we left fatter, happier, and plotting our return.
