About Padstow
We finally rolled into town just as the golden light was hitting the harbour, and there it was – our little holiday let, a cosy modern flat tucked right in the heart of it all, with a nod to that nautical vibe you can’t escape round here. First impressions? Blimey, it knocked us for six. We tumbled out of the car, arms laden with bags, only for the front door key to stick like it was glued. Five minutes of jiggling later (and a quick panic call to the host), we were in, and it was love at first step. Sleek and comfy, with everything you need – a cracking kitchen for knocking up brekkies, and those massive windows framing the boats bobbing about down on the quay. We dumped the luggage and cracked open a couple of cold ones on the balcony, watching the world go by. The mishaps melted away; suddenly, we were grinning like idiots. Next morning, we wandered straight out to Stein’s for fish and chips – proper fresh-off-the-boat stuff, wrapped in paper and scoffed on the harbour wall. Padstow’s got that magic where you can’t walk ten yards without stumbling on something brilliant. We pottered along the quay, past the pilchard cellars, nabbing pasties from the bakery that were still warm and flaky. Afternoon saw us on the coastal path towards Trevone Bay, just a short stroll away – the sea all turquoise and inviting, though I bottled it on the swim thanks to the chill. Instead, we flopped on the sand, building daft sandcastles and people-watching the dog-walkers. One evening, we hit a little seafood spot nearby – mussels in cider, crab claws that tasted like the ocean itself. Sat there as the sun dipped, fairy lights twinkling on the water, I had one of those quiet moments. You know, the kind where you think, “Blimey, life’s too short not to do this more often.” Work stress, daily grind – it all felt miles away. Sure, the arrival was a faff, but that chaos just made the first impressions hit harder. Padstow wrapped us up in its charm, and we didn’t want to leave. If you’re after a proper Cornish reset, hunt down a spot like that – you won’t regret it. |
