We’d been on the road for hours, the satnav cheerfully announcing “you have arrived” just as we realised we’d overshot the turning and were now wedged in a tiny Cornish lane with a tractor bearing down on us. By the time we reversed into the right driveway, the dog was howling, the kids were arguing about who’d lost the pasty, and I was muttering that next time we’d take the train.

Chi An Mor sat waiting at the end of a short gravel track, its whitewashed walls glowing in the late light. The first thing that hit me wasn’t the sea view—though that was there, a slice of blue between the dunes—but the smell of warm stone and salt on the breeze. We tumbled out stiff-legged, and the front door opened with the sort of easy click that said someone had thought about the little things. Inside, the kitchen still held the faint scent of the last guests’ coffee, and the kettle was already filled, which felt like the sort of quiet welcome that makes you exhale properly for the first time all day.

The boys claimed the twin room overlooking the garden before I’d even got the bags in, and I found myself standing in the open doorway, watching the evening light slide across the slate floor. It struck me then how quickly the journey’s small disasters shrink once you’re actually here; the missed turning, the half-eaten snacks, even the dog’s dramatic howling—they all seemed to belong to someone else’s holiday. Out on the patio, two weathered chairs faced the low wall that separated us from the footpath, and beyond that the dunes rolled straight down to the beach. I could hear the faint rush of waves already, steady as a heartbeat.

We didn’t unpack straight away. Instead we wandered the short stretch of sand while the light faded, shoes in hand, the boys racing ahead and the dog discovering that wet sand is apparently the best thing in the world. Back at the cottage the fridge held milk and butter someone had left, and we made do with toast and whatever we’d brought, eating at the little table with the door still open. I caught myself wondering how many times I’d planned these trips down to the last detail only to have the best moments arrive sideways, like this one: tired, slightly ridiculous, and exactly right.
