About Padstow
The first thing we did was absolutely nothing. We dropped the bags, kicked off our shoes, and carried the deckchairs straight out to the small patio that looks over the sand. Someone had left a half-read thriller on the windowsill, so I claimed it without a second thought while my partner nipped back for cold drinks. Within twenty minutes the only sound was the soft flap of pages and the occasional gull arguing overhead. Every so often I’d glance up to watch the tide sliding in, then promptly forget what page I was on. Later we wandered the hundred or so steps down to the beach itself, barefoot and carrying nothing but a towel and a packet of biscuits. The sand was still warm from the afternoon sun, and we spent a ridiculous amount of time choosing the perfect spot to sit, as though the whole stretch belonged to us. Children further along were building a sand fort doomed to the next high tide, and I felt an odd tug of envy; there’s something freeing about knowing your only plan is to watch the water come and go. Back at the cottage the evening slipped by without ceremony. We grilled a couple of pasties from the village bakery, ate them off plates balanced on our knees, and let the radio murmur quietly from the kitchen. I kept meaning to unpack properly, but every time I stood up the view pulled me back outside again. By the time the light turned that soft, peachy colour you only seem to get in Cornwall, I realised I hadn’t checked my phone in hours. The emails could wait; the sunset couldn’t. Next morning the same gentle rhythm took over. Coffee on the patio, another chapter of the borrowed thriller, a slow stroll along the tideline hunting for tiny shells that would probably just end up in a pocket and forgotten. We talked about heading into the village for supplies, then looked at each other and decided the fridge could manage another day on what we’d brought. It felt almost rebellious to choose doing so little, but the sunshine made the decision easy. By the third afternoon I’d stopped keeping track of what day it was. The cottage had a way of stretching time, so that an hour reading in the deckchair felt like both a moment and a whole afternoon. Every so often a breeze would lift the pages, or a dog would trot past with its owner, and I’d smile without really knowing why. Padstow was right there if we wanted it, but for now the beach, the quiet, and the simple fact of being somewhere beautiful were more than enough. |
