Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Padstow after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell, but definitely a detour involving a wrong turn near Bodmin that had me circling a muddy farm track for twenty minutes, swearing at the satnav like it was my ex. Still, as I crested the hill towards Lanivet, the anticipation bubbled up; Cornwall's got that magic, doesn't it? Rolling hills giving way to glimpses of water, and there it was, this cracking seven-bedroom country house perched on the outskirts, right by a serene lake. First impressions? Blimey, it was even better than the photos—cosy yet grand, with that inviting open-plan living space drawing you in like a hug from an old mate.

We'd booked it for a family getaway, me, the missus, kids and a couple of mates, but honestly, the whole point was doing sod all. No packed itineraries, no rushing to tick off sights. Just pure, unadulterated slowing down. After unloading the car (and a quick moan about my dodgy packing skills), we flopped onto those plush sofas in the living area, the kind you sink into and forget the world exists. The massive telly was there if we fancied a binge, but who needs Netflix when you've got a conservatory begging for a good book and a cuppa? I cracked open my battered copy of some Poldark novel—fitting, eh?—and let the afternoon drift by, watching the lake shimmer outside.

The garden was the real star, though. Lush and private, stretching down to the water's edge, with spots to lounge under the trees or just amble about, breathing in that fresh Cornish air. We fired up the barbie one evening for sausages and spuds, but mostly it was grazing on pasties from the local shop in Lanivet, feet up on the patio. The on-site fishing? Tempted a couple of the lads, but nah, too much like effort. Tennis courts were there too, all pristine, but we gave them a wide berth—my back's not what it used to be after years of desk-slouching. Instead, lazy mornings in the kitchen, brewing tea in the fully kitted-out space, then spilling into that massive dining table for brekkie that stretched into elevenses.

One afternoon, curled up in the conservatory with the sun filtering through, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's mad rush back home—emails, deadlines, the school run—feels a million miles away here. Staring at the lake, ripples from a passing duck, I thought, "This is it, innit? This quiet joy of bugger all." The kids were happy mooching in the garden, spotting birds or skipping stones, and us adults just... were. No pressure, no plans. Padstow's nearby buzz—think harbour walks or a cream tea if the mood struck—but we barely stirred beyond a quick pasty run. It's the slowing down that recharges you, makes the everyday feel less grindy.

By the end of the week, we were all a bit reluctant to pack up, but happier for the reset. If you're after luxury without the faff, this spot's a gem. Proper holiday bliss.
