Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Padstow after that daft little mishap on the A30 – took a wrong turn near Bodmin and ended up looping through some narrow lanes with hedges scraping the sides of the car. Heart in my mouth for a minute, but it added to the adventure, didn't it? By the time I pulled up to the cottage, I was buzzing with anticipation, dreaming of fresh pasties and seafood feasts. First impressions? Spot on. It's a cosy little detached place, all homely and tucked away just on the edge of things, perfect for a foodie getaway.

We wasted no time diving into the eats. Unpacked the bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider, and I had a bash at cooking our first meal right there in the cottage kitchen. Nothing fancy – just some crab claws from the Padstow Harbour fish stall we'd nabbed on the way in, tossed with garlic butter and crusty bread from the bakery. I'm no Gordon Ramsay, mind you; nearly set off the smoke alarm faffing with the oven, but it turned out lush. Sat out on the patio as the sun dipped, feeling properly smug about my amateur efforts. That's the joy of these self-catering spots – you can play chef without the pressure.

Next morning, we wandered into Padstow proper, all five minutes down the road, and hit the Saturday market on the harbour. Blimey, what a spread: stalls groaning under glistening mackerel, plump mussels, and wheels of Cornish Yarg cheese that I couldn't resist. Picked up some sausages from the butcher and a punnet of strawberries that tasted like summer in a bowl. Back at the cottage, lunch was a total win – grilled those bangers with new potatoes and a herby salad. Managed not to burn anything this time, though I did have a quiet word with myself about portion sizes; turns out holiday appetites are a force of nature.

Evenings were pub heaven. Trekked over to the London Inn, just a short stroll away, for pints of Proper Job and plates of proper pub grub – fish and chips so crispy they could've stood up on their own, with mushy peas that hit the spot. Another night, it was the Borough Arms for a ploughman's that could've fed a family of four, washed down with a cheeky pint of Tribute. Laughed with the locals about my cooking disasters over the bar; they're a friendly bunch, always up for sharing tips on the best spots for a crab sandwich.

One evening, after a slightly overambitious attempt at making a seafood linguine (pasta ended up a tad sticky, lesson learned), I sat there with a cuppa, gazing out at the garden, and had a proper moment. You know, realising how these simple food-centred days recharge the batteries like nothing else. No rush, just good nosh and good company. Padstow's got that magic for it – fresh catches, hearty pubs, and a cottage kitchen begging for experiments. Can't wait to go back and perfect that linguine.
