Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow last autumn – the leaves were just starting to turn that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the lanes like nature’s own welcome mat. We’d set off from Bristol full of beans, kids buzzing in the back about pasty promises and beach adventures, but about halfway through Cornwall, disaster struck. The satnav decided to throw a wobbly, directing us down a narrow farm track that had us inching along behind a herd of cows plodding home for milking. Twenty minutes of low-gear purgatory later, we emerged, laughing at our daft selves, with the scent of damp earth and manure clinging to the car like a badge of honour. By then, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, casting everything in that magical, slanted light that screams ‘holiday’s here’.

Pulling up to the barn conversion just outside Padstow, my heart did a little flip – it looked every bit the cosy retreat we’d booked, with its pitched roof and welcoming windows glowing against the twilight. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside, the wood burner was already crackling away (cheers to the hosts for that touch), and the open-plan space felt like a hug after the road chaos. Autumn in this neck of the woods really sets the scene – no scorching summer crowds, just crisp air that makes every breath feel alive, and that soft, misty haze rolling in from the Camel Estuary.

We wasted no time settling in. Mornings kicked off with brews on the patio, watching dew sparkle on the garden hedges, the sort of quiet you can’t buy in a city. A short stroll took us to the South West Coast Path, where the bracken was turning rusty and the sea churned grey under scudding clouds – proper dramatic, like a scene from a Poldark episode, but without the corsets. We crunched through fallen leaves to Trevone Bay, a hidden gem just a mile away, where the tide pools mirrored the overcast sky and the kids poked about for crabs, their cheeks pink from the chill wind. No battling for space; it was ours alone, bar a few dog walkers nodding hello.

Lunch was a no-brainer: Rick Stein’s Seafood Café in Padstow proper, a quick hop by car. The autumn menu shone – plump mussels in cider broth, warming against the damp chill seeping through the windows. Back at the barn, we’d hunker down as daylight faded early (curse you, shorter days!), playing board games by the fire while rain pattered on the roof like gentle applause. One evening, I caught myself staring into the flames, mug of tea in hand, reflecting on how this season strips things back. No frantic sun-chasing; just us, proper family time, reminding me I’m guilty of rushing life too often. It’s the slowing down that autumn gifts you here – hearty pasties from the local bakery (crispy pastry perfection), wood-fired pizzas from a pop-up near the harbour, and those golden-hour walks where the low sun gilds the harbour boats.

Evenings wrapped with stargazing from the garden – Orion popping out early, the air sharp and clear post-rain. Padstow in autumn isn’t about peak-season frenzy; it’s the mellow magic of misty mornings, cosy nights, and that contented glow from simple joys. We left with full bellies, windswept grins, and a promise to return before the frost bites. Best decision ever.
