Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Bristol, full of beans after a fry-up breakfast, with the sat-nav promising a breezy three hours through Devon’s rolling hills. But oh no, halfway along the A39, the heavens opened, turning the road into a proper slick snake. I was belting out some dodgy karaoke to the kids’ playlist when a lorry sprayed us with what felt like half of Cornwall’s rainwater. Cue panic: windscreen wipers on full whack, me squinting like a mole, and the eldest moaning, “Dad, are we there yet?” We took a wrong turn near Wadebridge – classic me, ignoring the signs – and ended up looping through some tiny lanes that had hedges scraping the mirrors. By the time we spotted the sea glinting ahead, we were soaked, snacking on squashed crisps, and laughing at our own daftness. Arrival anticipation? Mate, it was more like desperate relief.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage just outside Padstow, though, it was love at first sight. It’s one of those cosy, traditional spots – think low doorways, a welcoming porch dripping with climbers, and that perfect seaside vibe without being slap-bang on the tourist trail. We tumbled out, bags flying, and the first impression hit like a warm pasty: pure charm. The garden sloped gently down towards glimpses of the Camel Estuary, and inside, it was all homely nooks with a kitchen that screamed “cook up a storm”. We’d booked it for the views and the quiet, and blimey, it delivered. Dropping our stuff, we cracked open the windows to that salty breeze – first proper breath of holiday magic after the road farce.

That evening, we wandered into Padstow proper, just a short hop away, still buzzing from the chaos. The harbour was buzzing with fishing boats unloading the day’s catch, and we grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway that wrapped ’em in proper newspaper. Sat on the harbour wall, watching the sun dip behind Trevose Head, it felt like we’d earned it. Next morning, first impressions kept delivering: a stroll along the estuary path to Rock, dodging dog-walkers and spotting seals bobbing about. The kids dashed to the sand at St George’s Cove – not too crowded, perfect for building wonky castles while I pretended to help but mostly sipped coffee from a thermos.

Of course, there was gentle self-reflection over a cream tea at a harbour café. Sat there, crumbs on my shirt, I thought, “You daft sod – why do you always turn a simple drive into an episode of Top Gear?” But that’s holidays for you, innit? The mishaps make the good bits shine brighter. We spent the days pottering: cycling the Camel Trail (helmets on after my driving antics), popping into local shops for fudge, and one evening, treating ourselves to seafood at a no-frills spot overlooking the water. The cottage became our telly-free haven – board games by lamplight, proper family time.

By the end of the week, that messy arrival felt like a distant giggle. Padstow’s got this knack of wrapping you up in its rhythms – tides, pasties, and all. If you’re after a proper Cornish reset, hunt down a spot like ours. Just pack a better sat-nav.
