Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow last month – me behind the wheel, Sarah navigating with that sat-nav that kept insisting we take a scenic route through Bodmin Moor. We were buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, windows down, dreaming of pasties and sea views. Then, classic us, about ten miles out, I missed a turning and ended up in a narrow lane with hedges taller than our car. Cue a ten-point turn, a bit of gentle bickering, and Sarah laughing so hard she nearly spilled her coffee. Mishap sorted, we finally rolled into the area, hearts lifting at the sight of the rolling hills giving way to the coast.

Pulling up to our holiday cottage just outside in Delabole – tucked away in these gorgeous surroundings – we were gobsmacked. Ample parking right there, and we paused to take in the well-kept gardens before even unloading. It’s this spacious, beautifully turned-out place, all luxury touches without feeling fussy, perfect for a chilled couple’s break like ours. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and flopped straight into the massive lounge, sinking into the leather sofa with the 70-inch Smart TV flickering on. Netflix queued, kettle on – home from home in seconds.

Next morning, we wandered into Padstow proper, just a short drive away. That place is pure magic for a relaxed getaway. We grabbed breakfast at a little café on the harbour – fresh crab sandwiches that tasted like they’d leapt straight from the sea. Strolled the quay, watching fishing boats bob, then ambled along the Camel Trail for a gentle bike hire. Nothing strenuous, just pedalling past creeks and marshland, stopping for ice creams that dripped faster than the tide came in. Lunch was at Stein’s, Rick’s spot – fish and chips that were crispy perfection, with a cheeky glass of white overlooking the water. We’re not big adventurers, Sarah and I; it’s these simple pleasures that hit the spot.

Back at the cottage, chaos ensued in the best way. I tried my hand at a pasty from the local bakery, but my attempt at Cornish heaving turned into a lumpy mess – think more rugby ball than crescent. Sarah found it hilarious, snapping pics while I salvaged it in the oven. Evenings were lounging with telly, her feet up, me fiddling with the smart controls. One night, we lit candles (okay, fairy lights) and cracked open a bottle from the nearby Trevibban Mill vineyard – smooth as, with views from the garden that made you forget the world.

It got me reflecting, sat there with the sea breeze whispering through the windows. We’re in our forties now, kids flown the nest, and trips like this remind you life’s about ditching the rush for cottage coziness. A spot of rain one afternoon? No bother – we baked scones (hers, not mine) and played cards till it cleared. Padstow and this gem of a spot nailed it: no frills, just us, good food, and that easy Cornish vibe. Can’t wait to go back.
