Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Spot on. Stepped into the bright open-plan living space, high ceilings letting in floods of light through those Velux windows. The kitchen was a dream – fully kitted out, begging for some holiday culinary chaos. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local Roseland rosé while the woodburner flickered to life in the sitting area. Sumptuous sofas? Check. Smart TV for the footie? Double check. Upstairs, three super-king bedrooms with zip-link beds meant no squabbles over space, and that en-suite was a godsend after sandy beach days. But let’s be honest, the real star was the food scene – Padstow’s a proper feast for the senses, just a short drive away. Day one, we hit the farmers’ market in the harbour square, arms laden with fresh mackerel, plump strawberries, and artisanal cheeses that smelled like heaven. Back at the cottage, I fancied myself a MasterChef, attempting a seafood grill on the terrace. The mackerel sizzled nicely, but my herb-crusted potatoes? A tad charred. Laughing over the wreckage with a chilled white, we agreed it tasted better than it looked – holiday cooking’s half the fun, innit? Evenings were pub heaven. The London Inn in Padstow became our local – proper pasties stuffed with steak and ale, washed down with a pint of Skinner's ale. One night, we splashed out at Stein’s Fish and Chips, queuing like locals for the crispiest batter and mushy peas that hit the spot. Kids demolished theirs; I savoured mine slowly, watching the boats bob. Another gem was the Cornish Arms, where the ploughman’s was a cheeseboard dream – mature cheddar, pickled onions, and crusty bread that could revive the dead. Tried my hand at a full Cornish breakfast one morning – sausages from the market, proper bacon, and eggs from a nearby farm. Utility room came in clutch for the washing-up carnage. Self-reflection moment: staring at the terrace sunset, plate empty, I realised I’d spent more time faffing in the kitchen than beachcombing. Who needs six-pack abs when you’ve got pasty gut? But honestly, it was bliss – no rush, just good grub and better company. Pudding was always pasty-inspired: strawberry clotted cream slices from the bakery. By week’s end, we’d bookended it with a terrace barbecue, flames dancing as we tucked into local lamb chops. If you’re after a foodie escape in this corner of Cornwall, this is it – bellies full, hearts happier. Can’t wait to go back. |
