Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Bristol at the crack of dawn, me navigating with my trusty phone, hubby at the wheel, and the kids bickering over crisps in the back. Everything was fine until we hit the twisty lanes around Wadebridge. I’d programmed the sat-nav for the holiday property, but in my bleary-eyed state, I somehow managed to send us down a narrow farm track that dead-ended at a gate with a very unimpressed farmer staring us down. “Turn around!” I yelped, as the car scraped perilously close to a hedge. Hubby’s face was a picture – red as a tomato – while the kids howled with laughter. Fifteen minutes and a three-point turn later (more like a 15-point, truth be told), we were back on track, hearts racing but spirits high. That little mishap had us giggling all the way to Padstow, turning what could’ve been a grumpy start into proper comedy gold.

By the time we rolled into the village, the anticipation was buzzing. Padstow’s got that magical pull – those quaint streets lined with pasty shops and fishing boats bobbing in the harbour. We were dying to see the property we’d booked, a cosy modern terraced house right in the heart of it all, with a fresh, welcoming vibe that screamed “kick back and relax.” Parking was another mini-adventure; we circled twice before squeezing into a spot that felt like it was made for a Smart car, not our estate. Lugging cases up the steps, I fumbled the keys at the door – naturally – and for a split second wondered if the holiday gods were testing us. But no, the door swung open to the most brilliant first impressions: a light, airy open-plan living space with huge windows flooding the place with that golden Cornish sun. The kitchen was kitted out just right for family feasts, and the bedrooms upstairs? Comfy beds begging for a nap after our chaotic journey.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out, the sea air hitting us like a tonic. First stop: a wander down to the harbour, where the smell of fresh fish and chips had us salivating. Padstow’s alive with that proper seaside buzz – seals barking from the rocks, pasty windows steaming up, and locals nodding hello like old mates. We grabbed some cream teas from a spot just round the corner (jam first, obviously), perching on the harbour wall to watch the world go by. The kids dashed off to poke around the boats, while I sipped my tea, feeling that gentle glow of “we’ve made it.” Later, we strolled to Trevone Bay, a quick hop away, dipping toes in the rock pools and dodging waves – pure joy after the morning’s madness.

Looking back, that bumpy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It forced us to laugh off the stress and dive right into the good stuff. Staying slap bang in Padstow meant everything was on our doorstep – no long treks, just easy days of beachcombing, pub lunches at the likes of the Shipwrights, and evenings back at the house with board games and takeaways. I caught myself one sunset, glass of wine in hand on the patio, thinking how these simple spots recharge the soul like nothing else. If you’re after a holiday that feels like home but with extra magic, this is it. We’re already plotting a return – minus the farm track detour, hopefully.
