Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up to the cottage, my heart did a little flip. It was one of those classic Premier properties – cosy, family-friendly terraced spot right on the edge of town, with that welcoming vibe that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a while.” First impressions? Spot on. The kids bolted inside, claiming the bunk beds before we’d even unpacked, while we dumped our bags in the snug lounge and cracked open a couple of tins. The place felt like a hug – perfect for us lot, with space for everyone to sprawl without tripping over each other. Padstow’s magic hit us straight away. We wandered down to the harbour that first evening, the sun dipping low over the water, fishing boats bobbing gently. Grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway – proper crispy batter, fat chunks of cod – and ate them on the quay, dodging the inevitable seagull squadrons. “No dive-bombing this time,” I joked to the family, and we all cracked up. Simple pleasures, right? That’s what this trip was about. Next morning, we ambled over to Trevisker Beach, just a short stroll away – golden sands, waves gentle enough for the kids to paddle without turning blue. I had one of those dad moments, building the world’s wonkiest sandcastle while they splashed about, and it hit me: when did life get so frantic back home? Here, in this unhurried bubble, we were just us – no schedules, no screens (well, apart from my sneaky phone checks). Cottage life brought its own gentle chaos too: the kettle boiling over during breakfast (twice), a epic Uno tournament that ended in giggles and fake tears, and me burning the toast while trying to master the quirky toaster. Hilarious, really – I’m no chef, but it felt brilliant faffing about together. Afternoons meant pottering to the local bakery for pasties – Stein’s influence everywhere, but we kept it low-key with takeaway from a no-frills spot. Evenings were cottage cosiness: board games by the fire (imaginary, given the mild weather), stories from the kids about imaginary pirates on the Camel Estuary. One night, we walked the harbour path at dusk, hands linked as a family, watching the lights flicker on. Pure bliss. Reflecting now, back in the grind, that break was gold. Padstow’s got that knack for slowing you down, reminding you what matters amid the sand, pasties, and minor mishaps. We’re already plotting a return – seagulls permitting. |
