Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Me and the missus finally decided to treat ourselves to a proper getaway down in Porthleven, just the two of us shaking off the daily grind. We'd booked this cracking little coastal spot tucked away off the South West Coast Path, and I was buzzing with anticipation the whole drive from up country. Picture it: windows down, pasties scoffed in the services, and that first whiff of sea air as we hit Cornwall. But typical me, I took a wrong turn somewhere near Helston – ended up on a single-track lane that had me white-knuckling the wheel, dodging hedges and a cheeky tractor. "This better be worth it," I muttered, while she laughed and snapped pics of the rolling hills. Turns out, it was – and then some.

Pulling up was a right adventure; the rugged track had us bouncing like we were in a rally car, but as soon as we crested the hill, blimey, what a first impression. There it was, this quirky one-of-a-kind cottage nestled in the wild West Cornwall landscape, with turquoise seas peeking over the cliffs and not a soul in sight. We tumbled out, grinning like kids, lugging our bags over the uneven ground. Inside, it was all cosy character – perfect for us lot who just wanted to flop and forget the world.

First morning, we laced up our boots and hit the Coast Path right from the door. Porthleven's harbour was only a short clifftop stroll away, that crescent of golden sand and bobbing fishing boats looking straight out of a postcard. We wandered down to the beach, dodging waves and picking up bits of sea glass, then treated ourselves to fresh crab sandwiches from one of the little shacks. Simple pleasures, eh? Back at the cottage, chaos ensued – I tried my hand at a full English with local eggs we'd nabbed from a farm honesty box, but managed to set off the smoke alarm with overdone bacon. She rolled her eyes, handed me a tea towel, and we ended up eating it on the terrace anyway, watching gulls wheel over the sea. Proper cottage life, messy and brilliant.

Evenings were pure unwind time. We'd crack open a couple of local brews – nothing fancy, just crisp Cornish ales from the offy in the village – and potter about. One night, we ambled into Porthleven for seafood at a harbourside pub; plump prawns and chips, with the tide lapping outside. No kids, no schedules, just us chatting rubbish and holding hands like we did twenty years back. I had a quiet moment sat there on the cliffs one afternoon, pint in hand, thinking how we'd got so caught up in life lately. This place stripped it all back – the wind in your hair, the salt on your lips, that deep breath of peace. Made me realise we need more of this, just us two.

Short walks to hidden coves kept things low-key; we'd paddle in rock pools or flop on the sand with a book. No grand plans, just the rhythm of tides and telly in the evenings. That bumpy arrival? Forgotten in a heartbeat. If you're after a relaxed couple's break in Cornwall's wild heart, seek out a spot like this. It's the chaos and calm you didn't know you craved. Can't wait to go back.
