Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Driving down to Porthleven from Redruth felt like the perfect start to our little getaway, until the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us on a detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. We ended up behind a tractor chugging along at snail's pace, laughing as we waved to the farmer who gave us a cheery thumbs-up. By the time we rolled into the village, the sun was dipping low over the sea, and honestly, that first glimpse of the harbour with its bobbing boats and the waves crashing on the beach had us grinning like kids. All that anticipation built up from scrolling through holiday snaps online? Totally worth it.

The cottage we booked was this cosy little gem right in the heart of Porthleven – think classic seaside vibes with a welcoming feel that instantly made us kick off our shoes and flop onto the sofa. No grand entrance, just that comforting hug of a place that's spot-on for a relaxed couple's break. Central spot like this is brilliant; you can wander everywhere on foot, soaking up the laid-back charm without a car in sight.

First morning, we ambled down to the beach for a proper Cornish brekkie from one of the beach cafés – bacon sarnies and steaming mugs of tea, with sand between our toes. Porthleven's got this ace surf scene, so we watched the pros carving up the waves at the harbour wall, feeling dead impressed but secretly chuffed we weren't tempted to grab a board ourselves. Instead, we mooched around the independent shops, picking up some local fudge and a quirky print for the mantelpiece back home. Lunch was fish and chips from the harbourside chippy, eaten on a bench overlooking the breakers – simple pleasures, but they hit just right.

Afternoons blurred into gentle chaos, the sort that makes cottage life so addictive. One day we tackled a clifftop walk along the coastal path, getting gloriously windswept and stopping for pasties from a bakery that smelled like heaven. Back at the cottage, I tried my hand at a cream tea (jam first, obviously), but managed to slather clotted cream everywhere – Dave still teases me about the state of the kitchen counter. Evenings were for firing up the log burner, cracking open a bottle of local gin, and bingeing a bit of telly while the sea roared outside. That central location meant we could pop out for a pint at a nearby pub with live folk music, or just stroll the harbour at dusk, hand in hand.

Reflecting on it now, as we packed up feeling all refreshed, I reckon that's the magic of a spot like this – no frantic itineraries, just us two rediscovering the joy in small things amid the lovely disorder of holiday life. Porthleven wrapped us up in its cosy arms, and we'll be back for more of that sweet, salty chaos before long.
