About Porthleven
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – we’d packed the car to the gills with wellies, waterproofs, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. A rogue pothole later, and we’d got a puncture, right as the heavens opened. Typical British road trip, eh? But after a quick fix at a nearby garage, we rolled into Porthleven just as the sun peeked out, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. Spotting the sea glinting ahead had us grinning like kids.

Pulling up to our first-floor apartment, we were chuffed to bits. Perfect for our big family gathering – mates and cousins all crammed in – it’s got this cracking panoramic sea view that hits you straight away, and it’s tucked away for that proper getaway feel, just moments from the harbour and a mere 30 metres from the beach. Secluded but not isolated; you step out and bam, harbour life buzzing below.

First morning, we laced up our boots for a hike along the South West Coast Path – couldn’t wait to tackle those cliffs. The weather was glorious, blue skies stretching over Loe Bar, that massive shingle beach where the freshwater lagoon meets the sea. We wandered out from the apartment, past the harbour’s fishing boats bobbing gently, and followed the path towards Rinsey Head. The views! Crashing waves below, gulls wheeling overhead – pure magic. We paused for pasties from the harbour bakery, steam rising as we scoffed them on a bench, wind whipping our hair. Felt like we’d cracked the code to proper relaxation.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Come afternoon, the fog rolled in thick as pea soup from the Atlantic, turning our planned clifftop ramble into a squinting stumble. Plans shifted sharpish; no way were we risking those edges in zero vis. Instead, we pivoted to a gentle beach walk right on our doorstep. Porthleven Beach was windswept and wild, waves pounding the sand, but we layered up and plodded along, laughing as the rain started spitting sideways. Dodging jellyfish washed up by the tide, we chatted rubbish and collected shells – simple joys that beat any itinerary.

Next day, same story: bright start luring us onto the path towards Prussia Cove, that smuggling cove with its hidden history. We huffed up the inclines, rewarded by seals barking from the rocks below. Then, cue the downpour – horizontal rain that soaked us through in minutes. Sheltering under a rocky overhang, dripping and giggling, we turned back for the apartment. Hot mugs of tea, sea views through rain-streaked windows, board games till the clouds lifted. It forced us to slow down, you know? Made me reflect – I’m always rushing about back home, chasing the next thing. Here, the weather was boss, teaching us to roll with it, literally.

By week’s end, we’d notched up miles of coastal hikes, from harbour loops to beach treks, all shaped by that unpredictable Cornish climate. Porthleven’s paths are brilliant for it – rugged, rewarding, never dull. If you fancy walks with a side of weather roulette, this spot’s a gem. We left knackered, windswept, and utterly hooked.
