About Porthleven
We’d barely made it out of Penzance before the satnav decided we needed a detour through a field of bewildered sheep. By the time we bumped down the narrow lane into Newlyn and found the cottage, I was convinced the journey had aged me ten years. The key was under the flowerpot exactly where the host had promised, and the moment we stepped inside the quiet little house I felt the week stretch out like warm tarmac.

The garden caught the afternoon sun straight away, so we dumped the bags, made tea in mismatched mugs, and carried the lot outside. From the bench you could see a slice of sea between the rooftops, and the air smelled faintly of salt and warm stone. We didn’t unpack properly for hours; instead we sat with our feet up, listening to gulls and the occasional car easing past on the lane.

Next morning the beach at Porthleven was only a short stroll away. The tide was out, leaving wide wet sand perfect for slow wandering. We took a blanket, two paperbacks, and the remains of a pasty from the bakery on the corner. I read the same paragraph three times before giving up and just watching the waves fold over themselves. My partner dozed with a cap over his face, and for once neither of us felt the need to plan anything.

Back at the cottage the kitchen opened straight onto that sunny patch of grass, so lunch happened outside again—bread, cheese, tomatoes that tasted properly of summer. We left the doors wide and let the breeze move through the rooms, carrying away any leftover city noise. In the afternoon we wandered down to the harbour wall, bought ice creams from the little van, and sat on the steps watching boats bob. Nobody suggested a long walk or a timetable; we simply drifted back when the sun dipped.

Evenings were gentle. We cooked simple things in the cottage kitchen, ate at the scrubbed table with the window open, and afterwards stretched out on the sofa with the last of the light. One night we played cards until we both kept yawning mid-hand. I’d come down thinking I ought to see every cove and eat at every pub, but by the third day the idea felt unnecessary. The real luxury was doing almost nothing and still feeling as though we’d been away properly.

On the last morning I stood in the garden with a final cup of tea, watching the gulls wheel over the rooftops. The mishap on the way in already seemed like a story we’d tell rather than a stress, and the cottage had done exactly what we’d hoped: given us space to slow down. We locked the door, slid the key back under the pot, and drove off with sand still in our shoes and nothing on the calendar for weeks.
