We’d barely made it off the A30 before the satnav decided we were “arriving” at a lay-by three miles short of Porthleven. By the time we’d turned round, argued about whose phone was right and finally bumped down the narrow lane to Spernenwyn, the boot was half-open and the dog was wearing somebody’s jumper. Typical start to a family holiday.

The cottage sits just above the harbour, a short scramble down a path that smells of salt and warm grass. We tumbled out stiff-legged, the children already barefoot, and the first thing that hit us was the quiet—only the slap of waves against the harbour wall and the odd gull complaining overhead. Inside, everything felt ready for exactly the sort of week we needed: a big kitchen table already set with mismatched mugs, a wood-burner stacked with logs, and windows that looked straight onto the water.

We left the unpacking for later and wandered down to the beach with pasties from the little shop by the slipway. The sand was still warm from the afternoon sun, scattered with rock pools the kids attacked with plastic nets. My partner found a flat stone that actually skimmed, which felt like a minor triumph, and I sat on a towel pretending to read while secretly watching them all. It struck me, not for the first time, how little we need when the sea is doing most of the entertaining.

Back at Spernenwyn the light had turned that soft, late-gold colour that makes everything look gentler. We ate at the garden table, listening to the tide creep in, and nobody minded that the Wi-Fi was patchy or that the Wi-Fi password was written on a scrap of paper Blu-Tacked to the fridge. After supper the children dragged blankets onto the sofa and we watched the last of the sunset from the window seat, the sort of simple evening that somehow feels like a proper event.

I’d worried beforehand that a week by the sea might feel too quiet, that we’d miss the usual rush of plans, but already the cottage had done its job. It offered just enough space to spread out and not quite enough distractions to keep us from noticing how good it felt to be together, shoes off, sand in the car and nowhere else we needed to be.
