About Porthleven
Starboard turned out to be the little white cottage tucked just behind the harbour wall, its blue door already looking more welcoming than any hotel lobby. We hauled our bags through the drizzle, shoes squelching on the wet cobbles, and the moment the key turned we were hit by that unmistakable seaside smell—salt, woodsmoke and faintly of yesterday’s fish and chips. Inside, the place felt instantly like someone else’s happy place: a squashy sofa facing the window, a shelf of well-thumbed paperbacks, and a kettle that boiled in record time. We stood there dripping onto the mat, steaming mugs in hand, and already the long drive felt worth it. From the front step you could just glimpse the harbour through a gap between rooftops, slate-grey water choppy under the clouds. A few fishing boats were tied up, their ropes slapping against the hulls in the wind. We wandered the short distance down to the slipway, shoes still damp, and watched a dog enthusiastically chase a rogue tennis ball into the shallows while its owner shouted half-hearted warnings. The little high street was quiet mid-week, just a couple of locals nipping into the bakery and the odd tourist peering at the surf forecast in the shop window. Everything felt close and manageable—no need to drive anywhere else, which suited us perfectly after the marathon journey. Back at the cottage the rain eased, leaving everything sparkling. We opened the windows and let the breeze carry the sound of waves straight inside. Sitting on the bench outside with fish-finger sandwiches from the deli down the road, I caught myself thinking how rarely we slow down like this. The wing mirror was still wonky, the car boot was full of unpacked bags, and neither of us had checked work emails once. For once, the journey’s little disasters seemed to have done us a favour, nudging us straight into holiday mode before we’d even unpacked. |
