About Porthleven
The cottage itself looked exactly as promised: a low, whitewashed place tucked just behind the sea wall, with a wooden bench already catching the last warmth of the day. We tumbled out stiff-legged, grabbed the key from the lockbox and stepped inside to the smell of fresh coffee someone had considerately left on. The kitchen was small but perfectly judged—two mugs, a pint of milk in the fridge, and a note wishing us “a proper Cornish rest.” We didn’t even unpack properly; we just dropped bags by the sofa and headed straight out again, drawn by the sound of the waves slapping against the harbour wall fifty yards away. Porthleven’s harbour curved away on either side of us, fishing boats rocking gently, gulls wheeling overhead like nosy neighbours. The tide was on the turn, leaving glossy ribbons of sand that caught the pinkish light. We wandered along the short promenade, past the chippy that still had a queue despite the late hour, and found ourselves laughing about the satnav incident all over again. It felt good to be laughing at ourselves; after months of city noise and deadlines, the simple relief of being slightly lost had already started to unknot something in my chest. Back at the cottage the bench outside proved irresistible. We sat with takeaway pasties, watching the sky fade from peach to deep navy while the automatic harbour lights flicked on one by one. The cottage’s front room glowed behind us, and every so often a larger wave would send a faint mist of spray across the wall, catching the lamplight like tiny diamonds. I realised, quite suddenly, that I hadn’t checked my phone in over an hour. For once, that felt like the real arrival. |
