Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to this cracking three-storey holiday home on the outskirts of Devoran after what felt like the most faff-filled drive down from up country. Picture this: I'd packed the car to the gunnels with enough snacks, wellies, and board games to survive a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Truro. It decided the best route involved a narrow lane that was basically a goat track, complete with a flock of sheep blocking the way and me honking like a deranged goose. One particularly stubborn ewe stared me down as if I'd personally offended her fleece, and I ended up reversing into a hedge while trying to U-turn. Scrapes on the wing mirror? Check. Me swearing under my breath at the dashboard? Double check. But hey, that's Cornwall for you – it keeps you on your toes before you've even unpacked.

By the time I pulled up, heart racing and a bit sweaty, the anticipation was bubbling over. I'd been dreaming of this quiet escape for weeks, imagining cosy evenings by a woodburner after proper Cornish adventures. And blimey, first impressions? Spot on. Nestled with these stunning rural views stretching out over the countryside, it felt like stepping into a hug from the landscape itself. The Bissoe cycle trail was right on the doorstep, tempting us with its promise of easy peddles down to the coast at Portreath. We tumbled out of the car, kids moaning about the delay but eyes widening at the private balcony overlooking it all – perfect for morning coffees with a sea-tinged breeze.

Inside, it was love at first sight. That spacious open-plan living space just swept you up: a kitchen kitted out for whipping up pasties or a full roast (we tested it immediately with fish and chips from the local in Devoran), flowing into a dining area where we could all squash round the table for storytelling sessions. Then the sitting room, with its toasty woodburning stove begging to be lit and a telly for rainy afternoons – though who needs it with those views? It screamed 'relax here, you've earned it' after my arrival circus.

We wasted no time settling in. A quick bimble along the cycle trail that first evening had us spotting buzzards wheeling overhead and wildflowers nodding in the hedges – pure magic, and only a stone's throw from the property. Back for supper, stove crackling, we laughed about my sheep standoff, the kids declaring it the best holiday house ever. Me? I had a quiet moment on the balcony as the sun dipped, sipping a brew and reflecting on how these little mishaps make the good bits shine brighter. Sometimes you need a hedge-scraping detour to appreciate the calm that follows. If you're after a luxurious bolt-hole for family or mates, with countryside on tap and coast within reach, this is the spot. Can't wait to go back – minus the sat-nav drama next time.
