Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d piled into the car in the pouring rain somewhere near Helston, me navigating with a dodgy signal on my phone, and my partner at the wheel. Five minutes in, I’d somehow directed us down a narrow lane that dead-ended at a farm gate, with a cow staring us down like we’d gatecrashed its tea party. A quick three-point turn (more like fifteen) later, and we were back on track, laughing about it over thermos flasks of tea. By the time we trundled into Mawnan Smith, just a few miles from Falmouth and Penryn, the sun was peeking out, and my heart was doing that little flip of holiday anticipation – you know, that buzz of ‘this is it, proper escape time’.

Pulling up to the place was pure magic. It’s this cracking luxury holiday home settled on the outskirts, dog-friendly and perfect for us two, with off-road parking that meant no scrabbling about in the dark. First impressions? Blown away. The communal grounds stretched out lush and inviting, and those on-site perks – an outdoor heated pool, hot tubs, sauna, and a games room with a pool table and table tennis – had me grinning like a kid. Stepping inside, the light and airy open-plan living space felt like a warm hug: a fully-equipped kitchen for knocking up brekkie, a dining table begging for a bottle of fizz, and even a smart little workspace desk if I fancied pretending to be productive. But who was I kidding?

The joy of it all was doing sod all – proper lazy cottage days, the kind you dream about mid-week at the office. We’d flop into the garden first thing, mugs of coffee in hand, watching our dog chase shadows across the grass while the Lizard Heritage Coast hummed quietly in the distance. No rush, no plans. I’d crack open a book – some dog-eared paperback I’d been meaning to read for months – and lose hours under the dappled sunlight, only stirring for a dip in the hot tub when the mood took us. One afternoon, I caught myself just staring at the horizon, feeling that gentle pang of self-reflection: blimey, when did life get so frantic? This was the reset button I didn’t know I needed, slowing right down to savour the simple stuff.

Evenings were for lounging in the open-plan space, picking at homemade pasties (Cornwall, eh?) and challenging each other to a desultory game of pool in the games room – though I’m rubbish, so it mostly ended in giggles and calls for a rematch. A quick sauna session melted away any lingering tension, and we’d wander the grounds at dusk, breathing in that salty air from the nearby coast. No big adventures into Porthleven proper, just a cheeky pasty from Maenporth beach a couple of miles away if we fancied a leg-stretch. It was blissfully uneventful, and that’s the point – in a world that never stops, these lazy days recharged us more than any hike could. If you’re after that rare treat of switching off completely, this corner of Cornwall’s your spot. We left feeling lighter, already plotting a return.
