Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car from Bristol, kids in the back squabbling over crisps, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal, and my other half at the wheel, cursing the sat-nav’s obsession with winding B-roads. About 20 minutes from Mullion, where our place was tucked away, we hit a classic Cornish summer downpour. The wipers were going mental, and then – splash! – we hydroplaned right into a massive puddle, soaking the underside of the car and sending us into a bit of a skid. Heart in my mouth, we pulled over, laughing nervously as the rain hammered the roof. “Welcome to the West Country,” I quipped, wiping fog from the windscreen. A quick check confirmed no damage, just our pride a tad dented, and off we went again, anticipation bubbling up despite the chaos.

By the time we rolled into Mullion, the clouds were parting like they’d got the memo. Spotting the end-terrace house perched along that stunning bit of coast, my jaw dropped. What a first impression – those panoramic sea views hit you straight away, the kind that make you exhale and think, “Yeah, we’ve arrived somewhere special.” It’s a reverse-level setup, perfect for families like ours, with everything beautifully presented and screaming cosy seaside escape. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, kids already yelling about the hot tub on the enclosed terrace below. One of them tripped over a welly left by the previous guests – another mini-mishap – but honestly, who cared? Dragging our sodden luggage inside, we hit gold: two massive super-king bedrooms on the ground floor, one opening straight onto that terrace. I flopped onto the bed, staring out at the waves crashing below, and felt that proper holiday glow wash over me.

Upstairs, the open-plan living space was an absolute dream – spacious kitchen where I could already picture rustling up fish and chips, a big dining table for storytelling sessions, and squishy sofas by the gas fire for rainy nights in. We cracked open the balcony doors, and there it was: the soothing rhythm of the sea, promising al fresco brekkies in the sun. The real kicker? Access to the Mullion Cove Hotel just down the way – outdoor heated pool with those jaw-dropping views, a gym if we fancied pretending we’re fit, and a thermal spa that had me plotting lazy afternoons pronto. Fine dining at their bar and restaurant? Sorted for when cooking felt like too much effort post-beach.

That first evening, after a hot tub dip (kids splashed about like seals while I sipped a GandT, reflecting on how I’d been run ragged at work lately), we wandered the short stroll to Porthleven’s harbour. Grabbed pasties from the bakery, watched surfers tackle the swell at the beach, and mooched past the harbour lights as fishing boats bobbed. Light-hearted chaos of arrival aside, it was pure magic – a gentle nudge to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and just be. If you’re after a tranquil bolt-hole that feels like a hug from Cornwall itself, this is it. We’re already plotting a return, mishaps and all.
