Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d piled into the car in the pouring rain, sat-nav confidently directing us along those twisty Cornish lanes, when suddenly a rogue sheep decided to audition for the starring role in our personal disaster movie. It darted right in front of us, forcing an emergency swerve that had us laughing hysterically through the adrenaline. “Welcome to Cornwall,” my other half quipped, as we recovered and pressed on. By the time we rolled up, the clouds were parting just enough to reveal the sea, and my heart lifted. What a spot – this sleek, modern holiday home tucked into a prime position overlooking the bay, all clean lines and cosy vibes, promising the perfect escape for us two.

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and stepped out to that fresh, salty air. The anticipation had been building for weeks – visions of endless beach rambles – and it didn’t disappoint. That first afternoon, the sun even peeked out, so we laced up our boots for a gentle wander along the coastal path towards Porthleven’s harbour. The views were cracking: jagged cliffs dropping to foamy waves, gulls wheeling overhead, and the odd seal popping up like it was showing off. We timed it for low tide, picking our way over rocks and past rock pools teeming with life. Felt like kids again, poking at crabs and skimmin’ stones.

Next morning, classic British weather threw a curveball. Grey skies rolled in overnight, turning our planned long hike into a squelchy adventure. No matter – we’re hardy types. Waterproofs on, we headed out along the South West Coast Path towards Loe Bar, that massive shingle bank enclosing Cornwall’s largest freshwater lake. The wind whipped up, rain lashing sideways, but there’s something oddly brilliant about it. Muddy paths, puddles you can’t avoid splashing through, and that raw, untamed sea crashing below. We laughed at each other’s soggy hair and dripping noses, stopping at a bench for a flask of tea that tasted like nectar. It forced us to slow down, really take in the drama – the way the waves sculpted the cliffs, the wildflowers clinging on despite the battering.

By afternoon, the clouds lifted (as they do), and we were back at it, strolling the beach at low tide, dodging jellyfish washed up like alien blobs. One evening, under clearing skies, we timed a sunset hike up to the headland, rewarded with a sky on fire over the village. Porthleven’s harbour lights twinkled below, fishing boats bobbing gently. Pure magic.

Looking back, those weather flips were the highlight. They turned simple walks into stories – the bad days building character, the good ones pure joy. I caught myself reflecting on the drive home: in our hectic lives, we rarely let the elements dictate the pace. This trip reminded me there’s beauty in adapting, in soggy socks and spontaneous shelter under a cliff overhang. If you’re after a holiday where every path brings a surprise, Porthleven’s coastal trails from a spot like this are unbeatable. We’re already plotting the return.
