Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Porthleven after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Truro. The satnav had a right old tantrum just past Helston, insisting we turn left into a field that turned out to be someone's driveway—cue a hasty three-point turn with me apologising profusely to a bemused farmer through the window. My mate Dave, who'd come along for the ride, was in stitches, munching on pasties we'd grabbed earlier, crumbs everywhere. By the time we rolled into the village, hearts racing a bit from the near-miss, I was half-expecting the holiday to be cursed before it even started. But honestly, that anticipation melted away the second we parked up.

Pulling into the drive of this cracking little luxury three-bed house, I let out a massive sigh of relief. It's one of those cosy, modern spots tucked away on the edge of Porthleven, with big windows that scream "stare at the sea all day". First impressions? Bloody brilliant—well, apart from the bit where I fumbled the keys in the lock because my hands were still sticky from the pasty incident. We tumbled inside, bags everywhere, and it was like stepping into a hug. Spotless, comfy sofas begging to be flopped on, and a kitchen that looked ready for a proper Cornish fry-up. The views from the lounge straight out to the harbour had us both grinning like idiots. "This is it, mate," Dave said, already eyeing the patio doors.

That first evening, we shook off the arrival drama with a wander down to the beach—it's only a short stroll, and the sand was still warm from the sun. Porthleven's got that perfect vibe: fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, waves crashing on the shore, and the scent of chip shops wafting over. We grabbed fish and chips from the harbour chippy, sat on the pebbles, and watched the surfers catching the last light. I had a quiet moment there, feet in the water, thinking how daft I'd been stressing about the drive. Life's too short for satnav rage, innit? Reminded me I need to chill more often.

Next morning, after a lazy brekkie of local sausages and eggs (the kitchen made it dead easy), we hit the coastal path for a gentle clifftop walk. The views over Loe Beach and out towards the Lizard are stunning—proper postcard stuff, with gulls wheeling overhead and seals popping up now and then. We even popped into the village for a coffee at a quirky little café, chatting with locals about the big waves that draw the surfers. Lunch was pasties from Philps, naturally—crab and rocket for me, which hit the spot after our sea air exertions.

The house became our perfect base, especially those evenings firing up the barbecue on the patio, beers in hand, listening to the waves. Dave nailed a cracking playlist, and we solved all the world's problems (or at least debated the best pasty filling). One night, I snuck out for a solo sunset stroll along the harbour wall, reflecting on how these little escapes recharge the batteries. Sure, the arrival was a comedy of errors, but it made the first impressions even sweeter—Porthleven's magic wrapped up in a brilliant holiday home. Can't wait to go back.
