About Mill House.

Mawnan Smith, on the northern banks of the Helford estuary, is an ideal base for exploring west and central Cornwall. This charming village features a popular 17th-century thatched pub (the Red Lion), restaurant, shops, a working forge, and craft centre. Once a distribution hub for the Lizard Peninsula, it served as a staging post for goods ferried across the river. The restored 'Old Smithy' by the Anvil Trust recreates a traditional blacksmith. Near Maenporth Beach and the estuary, it's in a quiet Cornish corner, close to Falmouth's town centre, harbour, and attractions.

Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the leaves were turning all fiery orange and the Cornish air had that proper bite to it. We’d piled into the car from up country, kids buzzing in the back with pasties from a service station, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. Then, classic me, I missed the turning for the A394, ended up on some narrow lane with hedges scraping the sides, heart in my mouth as a tractor loomed in the mirror. A quick reverse manoeuvre and a sheepish wave later, we were back on track, laughing it off over the last crumbs.

Pulling up to the place, anticipation was sky-high – you know that flutter when you’ve been dreaming of cosying up somewhere special? First impressions didn’t disappoint: this stylish home-away-from-home screamed luxury without trying too hard, all sleek modern vibes and thoughtful touches. Stepping through the stable door, we were hit with the aroma of a welcome tray piled high with local treats – award-winning cheeses, chutneys, and biscuits that had us raiding it before bags were even unpacked. Ultra-modern insides with vast spaces, oak floors gleaming underfoot, and pops of modern art made it feel like a boutique hotel had crash-landed in the best way.

Autumn in Porthleven shaped everything, didn’t it? The season’s moody magic was bang on for hunkering down. That first evening, as drizzle pattered the windows, we fired up the wood burner in the massive open-plan living space upstairs – kitchen, dining, and sitting all flowing together like a dream. The warmth spread quick, turning the place into our cosy hub while the wind howled outside. Kids sprawled with board games and DVDs on the mega Smart TV, me flicking through coffee table books with a steaming mug from the gadget-packed kitchen island. It was pure indulgence, especially with the music streaming from the built-in iPad to drown out the rain.

Next morning, the low sun broke through, gilding the sea view, and we headed out to Loe Beach, just a short stroll away – that freshwater lagoon where the kids skimmed stones and we crunched through fallen leaves, the chill nipping our cheeks. Porthleven’s harbour was a short hop too, with fishing boats bobbing and the scent of fresh crab rolls from the quay. Back home, the enclosed garden was our private haven – fenced and gated for peace of mind, letting the little ones run wild under the turning trees while we sank into the giant hot tub, steam rising like a spa treat against the autumn nip. Evenings meant barbecues on the terrace (brave souls that we are), wrapped in blankets with glasses of red, watching the sky bruise purple.

One night, staring into the flames, I had a quiet moment – you know, reflecting on how these seasonal getaways recharge you. Amid the luxury – four plush bedrooms with Smart TVs, indulgent en-suites – it wasn’t about flash; it was the wood burner’s glow warding off the dark evenings, the hot tub thawing chilled bones, making autumn feel like a warm embrace. Porthleven in leaf-fall? Absolute perfection for families, blending wild coastal walks by day with total comfort by night. We left buzzing, already plotting a winter return for that all-season magic.
