Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the outskirts near Cury – last month. We’d piled into the car in the pouring rain somewhere near Truro, sat-nav confidently directing us along those twisty Cornish lanes. Then, disaster: a rogue pothole sent us skidding into a muddy verge, tyre deflated like a sad whoopee cushion. Half an hour later, with the spare on and me covered in muck, we finally rolled up, hearts racing but buzzing with that holiday anticipation. What a way to arrive!

Stepping inside this gorgeous barn conversion felt like a hug from an old mate – all cosy and stylish, with a hot tub bubbling away out back and a barbecue screaming for sausages. It’s perfect for a couple like us, or even a family, with that sleek spiral staircase leading up to an open-plan living space where you can flop on the sofa with the Smart TV on while rustling up dinner in the swish kitchen. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – we cracked open a bottle of local ale and toasted our survival.

But this trip was all about the walks, those proper Cornish coastal slogs that get the blood pumping. Day one dawned crisp and sunny, so we headed out from the property towards Mullion’s seafront, just a couple of miles away. The path along the cliffs was pure magic – gulls wheeling overhead, waves crashing below, and that endless turquoise sea stretching out. We wandered for hours, stopping for pasties from a beachside van, laughing as I nearly toppled over pretending to be a pirate. It was one of those moments where you think, “This is why we do this.”

British weather, though? It’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, the sky turned biblical – horizontal rain lashing the windows like it had a personal grudge. Our grand plan for the Porthleven harbour loop? Scrapped. Instead, we rugged up and improvised a soggy stomp along the local lanes back towards the coast, hoods flapping, puddles splashing up to our knees. It was grim, but oddly brilliant – we ended up sheltering in a bus stop, sharing soggy crisps and giggling about how we looked like drowned rats. By afternoon, the clouds parted just enough for a sneaky hike down to Polurrian Cove, the sun peeking out like it was apologising. Slippery steps, wildflowers nodding in the wind, and that fresh post-rain tang – heaven.

Reflecting on it now, over a cuppa back home, those weather-whipped walks were the highlight. Sure, the good days had us striding like kings along the cliffs between Mullion and Porthleven, spotting seals and breathing in the ozone. The bad ones forced us to adapt, turning potential washouts into daft adventures that bonded us closer. There’s something humbling about Cornwall’s moods – they remind you life’s not about perfect plans, but making the most of whatever the elements chuck at you. We’re already plotting a return, wellies packed just in case.
