Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the bit just before we arrived. We’d piled into the car in the drizzle up in Devon, full of that holiday buzz, kids chattering about pasty stops and beach castles. But halfway through Cornwall’s twisty lanes, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis. “Recalculating,” it chirped endlessly as we looped past the same sheep three times. I was convinced we’d end up in a field, but eventually, we spotted the sea glinting ahead, and there it was: our beachfront haven in Praa Sands, just a stone’s throw from Porthleven. Heart racing a tad from the detour, we pulled up, and blimey, first impressions? Spot on. The place looked like it had been waiting for us – all coastal chic with those uninterrupted sea views that make you go, “Yep, this’ll do nicely.”

It’s the sort of property that screams luxury without trying too hard: modern, comfy, right on the edge of Praa Sands Beach. Steps to the sand, and you could practically hear the waves lapping from the doorstep. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local rosé, and just... exhaled. That’s the joy of it, really – doing sod all, but properly. No grand plans, no ticking off lists. Just lazy cottage days stretching out like the horizon.

Mornings started slow. I’d potter out to the garden – a proper suntrap, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, with that glittering sea as your backdrop. Cuppa in hand, I’d flop into a lounger, book propped on my lap (some daft thriller I’d picked up in Porthleven’s little bookshop the day before). The kids would mooch about nearby, building pebble empires on the beach, but I’d be lost in pages, only stirring when the sun warmed my toes. Lunch? A cheeky pasty from the village, eaten picnic-style on the grass, crumbs flying as we watched surfers dot the waves below. Porthleven’s harbour is a quick stroll away – maybe we’d wander over for an ice cream from one of those no-nonsense beach huts, but honestly, the pull of the garden was stronger.

Afternoons blurred into dozing, really. I’d nod off under the parasol, waking to the gulls’ squawks and that salty tang in the air. One day, I caught myself staring at a cloud shaped like a pasty (fitting, eh?), and had a proper moment: when did life get so frantic back home? Nine-to-five grind, emails pinging at midnight – this was the reset button. No guilt, just the gentle rhythm of tides and turning pages. Evenings, we’d fire up the barbecue in the garden, feet up, as the sun dipped into the sea. Sausages sizzling, laughter over nothing, and that deep contentment of having nowhere to be.

By the end of the week, we’d barely scratched the surface of Cornwall’s gems – no need. It was all about slowing right down, letting the coast work its magic. If you’re after proper RandR, this corner of the Lizard Heritage Coast is pure gold. We left fatter, happier, and already plotting a return.
