Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
We'd been dreaming of a proper Cornish getaway for ages, just me, my wife, and the two kids, escaping the daily grind for some sea air and cottage cosiness. The drive down from up country was mostly a breeze, winding through those lush Devon lanes, but about 20 miles out, disaster struck – or what passes for it on a family road trip. The sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, directing us down a tiny track that ended in a muddy farmyard puddle. Cue the kids in hysterics, me reversing like a learner driver, and Sarah stifling laughs while handing out crisps to keep the peace. "Typical us," I muttered, finally back on the A-roads, hearts racing but spirits high. By the time we neared Porthleven, the anticipation was bubbling – those harbour views we'd seen online, the promise of fish and chips by the beach, it all felt tantalisingly close.

Pulling up to our semi-detached holiday home on the edges of Mullion, surrounded by rolling countryside, we were gobsmacked. Four off-road parking spots right there, which was a godsend for unloading the boot explosion of wellies, board games, and enough snacks to feed the village. Stepping inside, the sitting room hit us like a warm hug – plush and inviting with a woodburning stove begging for a fire, and these clever colour-changing lights that the kids immediately fiddled with, turning it into a disco den. Flicked on the Smart TV for a bit of CBeebies wind-down, and we were sorted.

First impressions? Spot on. It's the sort of place with leisure perks on site – gym for a sneaky post-breakfast sweat (though we mostly eyed it from afar), and an infrared spa that Sarah dragged me to on night one. Pure bliss, like melting into a puddle of relaxation. But honestly, the real magic was the simple stuff, that cottage life chaos we crave. Mornings started with brekkie chaos in the kitchen, everyone piling into plates of scrambled eggs while debating the day's plan. We'd amble the short hop to Porthleven's harbour, watching surfers tackle the waves at the beach – the kids built epic sandcastles, getting sandier than a Cornish pasty, while we sipped coffee from that little café overlooking the boats.

Afternoons were for pottering: a gentle stroll along the coast path to Loe Beach, skimbling stones and spotting seals bobbing in the distance. One evening, we tried our hand at a beach barbecue back at the house, but the wind had other ideas – sausages flying like frisbees, cue much giggling and me chasing them in my flip-flops. "Dad's the human hoover," the littlest one declared, and we howled. Evenings in, we'd hunker by the stove with hot chocolates, playing Uno till eyelids drooped.

Reflecting on it now, sat back home with the washing machine chugging, I realise it's these daft moments that recharge us. No grand adventures, just family giggles amid the everyday muddle – the kind of break that reminds you life's too short not to embrace the lovely mess. Porthleven and this gem of a spot nailed it. Can't wait to go back.
