Our trip to Porthleven staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Porthleven – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d loaded up the car in Bristol with enough pasties and crisps to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some winding B-road that decided to flood right in front of us. Cue a hasty three-point turn in the pouring rain, with me yelling at the windscreen wipers like they’d personally offended me. By the time we pulled up to this delightful character cottage tucked at the foot of a wooded valley near Clowance Bridge, in the quiet hamlet of Crowan just half a mile from Praze-an-Beeble, I was knackered but buzzing. First impressions? Magic. The place felt like a proper hug from Cornwall – cosy, tucked away, and with that wood-fired hot tub promising starry nights ahead. We couldn’t wait to crack it open.

No sooner had we unpacked than old Bert from up the lane wandered over, pipe in mouth and a grin like he’d won the lottery. He’s the local jack-of-all-trades, fixes everyone’s fences and knows every cow by name. “You lot from upcountry?” he asked, eyeing our fancy wellies. Turned out he’d lived there 60 years, and over a cuppa on the doorstep, he regaled us with tales of the time a fox nicked his best hen right under his nose. “Sly as a politician, that one,” he chuckled. We ended up chatting for an hour about the best spots for a proper pasty – his tip was the van parked by the bridge in Praze, run by his mate Doris, who “puts in extra swede just for locals.”

The next day, strolling the fields behind the cottage – proper lush countryside walks right on the doorstep – we bumped into quirky Sarah at the edge of the wood. She’s the herbalist type, foraging for nettles and wild garlic, with a dog that looked like it’d been stitched together from spare parts. “Fancy a brew from the brook?” she offered, and before we knew it, we were sipping nettle tea that tasted surprisingly decent. She spun yarns about the old tin miners who haunted these valleys, swearing she’d heard their picks at night. “Ghosts or badgers, take your pick,” she winked. Made me reflect a bit – back home, I’m always rushing about, nose in my phone. Here, chatting with strangers felt like the real recharge.

Evenings were for the hot tub, mist rolling over the fields as we soaked, but the characters kept coming. There was Tom the fisherman from Porthleven, popping by on his way back from the harbour – just a quick drive away. He’d brought mackerel fresh off the boat, insisting we grill it that night. “None of that supermarket rubbish,” he boomed, launching into a monologue about the time a seal stole his catch mid-haul. We laughed till our sides hurt, trading stories under the stars. His passion for the sea, and the way he lit up talking about the waves crashing in Porthleven, made you feel like you’d known him forever.

Those few days chatting with Bert, Sarah, and Tom – proper eccentrics with hearts of gold – turned a simple holiday into something special. No grand plans, just good crack and a bit of soul-searching in that steamy tub. If you’re after an escape that’s more about the people than the postcard views, this neck of the woods is pure gold. Can’t wait to go back.
