About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset last month – we’d packed the car to bursting with wellies, books, and enough tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Halfway there, we hit a proper Somerset downpour, and the windscreen wipers were working overtime while I gripped the wheel, muttering about why we hadn’t just taken the train. But as the rain eased and we crested a hill, there it was: this gorgeous converted barn nestled in the countryside near Axbridge, looking every bit the cosy haven we’d been dreaming of. My heart did a little flip – arrival anticipation doesn’t get much better than that.

First impressions? Spot on. It’s the sort of place that’s been done up with real flair, perfect for kicking back with family or mates. Spacious, welcoming, with everything you need to just… stop. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider, and that was us sorted for the weekend. No grand plans, mind – the joy of it all was doing precisely bugger all, in the best possible way.

Mornings started slow, with mugs of builder’s tea in the garden, watching mist roll off the Mendip Hills. Crook Peak loomed in the distance, all moody and inviting, but we’d eye it lazily from the loungers rather than lace up our boots. “We’ll walk it tomorrow,” we’d say, knowing full well tomorrow would bring the same delicious inertia. The garden was a proper suntrap, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and I’d flop down with a dog-eared paperback – some rubbishy crime novel that didn’t tax the brain. Hours vanished like that, interrupted only by the odd biscuit raid or a gentle doze. It was bliss, pure and simple.

Afternoons blurred into siestas and chats over cheese boards. The kids (well, my lot, who are barely kids anymore) sprawled on blankets, fiddling with cards or sketching the view, while we grown-ups swapped stories from the rocking chairs. No rushing about – Cheddar’s caves were only five miles off, tempting for a mooch, but we saved our energy for Burnham-on-Sea’s beach, a quick ten-minute drive away. We parked up, kicked off shoes, and let the sand squish between our toes, the sea air doing its magic. Back at the barn, evenings meant lighting the fire (not that we needed it half the time), rustling up a lazy pasta, and sinking into the sofas with a film. Carnival season was kicking off nearby – Bridgwater’s big one was just a short hop – but we caught the tail end of Burnham’s parade from afar one night, fireworks popping over the horizon as we sipped wine on the patio. Perfect backdrop, zero effort.

Looking back, that gentle self-reflection hits me: in our mad world of deadlines and doom-scrolling, what a luxury to just slow down. No FOMO, no itineraries – just the barn, the garden, and the sheer relief of switching off. We left feeling recharged, already plotting a return. Somerset’s got that magic; this spot nailed it. If you’re after proper downtime, pack your patience for the drive and go. You won’t regret it.
