About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just as we hit the twisty lanes near Ilminster, directing us straight into a muddy farm track that had my little hatchback sliding about like it was auditioning for a rally. We were late, everyone was peckish, and my other half was shooting me looks that could curdle milk. “Why didn’t we just stop at that services?” she muttered, as I wrestled the wheel through a puddle the size of a small pond. Classic me – always thinking I know better than the signs.

By the time we finally spotted the turning into that ancient orchard, tempers were frayed, but oh boy, was it worth it. Nestled there with views over Dillington Park, this converted and extended old Estate cottage is now a beautifully re-imagined rural retreat, where contemporary design and an idyllic countryside setting combine to create a fabulous ‘best-of-both-worlds’ escape for groups of friends and families to enjoy. Pulling up, I let out a massive sigh of relief – the place looked like something out of a proper countryside dream. All sleek lines inside peeking through the windows, yet bang in the heart of apple trees heavy with fruit. First impressions? Bloody marvellous, even if I did nearly trip over the kids’ bags unloading in my haste.

We bundled in, mud still caking our boots, and it was like stepping into a warm hug. The open-plan space screamed cosy chic – think plush sofas begging for a collapse, a kitchen that made me feel like a telly chef despite my usual burnt toast efforts, and those massive windows framing the park’s rolling fields. The anticipation had been building all week, scrolling pics on my phone during dull meetings, but nothing prepared me for the real thing. Laughter erupted as we cracked open a bottle of local cider (grabbed from a farm shop just down the lane), toasting our chaotic arrival. The kids bolted straight out to explore the orchard, whooping as they found a rope swing dangling from an old tree – pure magic.

That first evening, we wandered a short stroll to the park’s edges, spotting deer grazing in the dusk and breathing in air so fresh it cleared the city cobwebs from my lungs. Back at the cottage, we rustled up a simple supper of pasties from Ilminster’s bakery – buttery, flaky perfection – and sprawled out playing board games till late. No telly needed; the views did all the entertaining.

Looking back, that mishap on the road was a blessing in disguise. It made the arrival feel earned, you know? Reminded me to slow down, savour the detours. In a world of rushed weekends, this spot forced us to unwind properly – no signals stressing us out, just family, fresh air, and a cracking retreat that’s already got us plotting a return. If you’re after a Somerset hideaway that ticks every box, hunt one like this down. You won’t regret the muddy detour.
