About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – we’d packed the car to the gills with kids’ toys, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into some narrow lane that looked like it hadn’t seen daylight since the war. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, while my other half yelled “turn left here!” at a junction that was basically two hedges fighting for dominance. Classic us – always turning a simple journey into an unplanned adventure. But as we finally trundled into the pretty village of East Lambrook, just a mile from South Petherton, the stress melted away. The rolling fields and thatched cottages had me grinning like an idiot; I could already picture lazy evenings with a cuppa, watching the world go by.

Pulling up to the place, my heart did a little flip – it was this newly converted, detached barn, all cosy and inviting, perched up on the first floor to soak in those stunning rural views. We climbed the wooden staircase, bags bumping everywhere, and stepped into this bright, open-plan space that just screamed “relax”. Velux windows flooded it with light, and out on the large balcony, with its table and chairs, we spotted deer ambling through the neighbouring orchard straight away. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like our own little rural hideaway, perfect for a family unwind.

We’d come for a proper chilled break, the kind where you swap deadlines for daisy chains and packed lunches. Mornings kicked off with porridge on the balcony, ears pricked for owls hooting at dawn (or was that just the kids pretending?). The littles spent hours pottering in the garden, mud up to their elbows, while we ambled down to South Petherton for fresh bread from the bakery – that high street is a gem, with its little shops and the Hamstone Museum for a quick history fix without anyone moaning. Afternoons were pure cottage chaos: a picnic by the River Parrett, where we skimmed stones and dodged enthusiastic dogs, or a gentle hike up to the Lytes Cary Manor gardens, just a short drive away. The air smelled of wildflowers and damp earth, and honestly, it was bliss.

One evening, as the sun dipped low and pheasants strutted about like they owned the place, we lit the barbecue (after a minor panic over where the matches were). The kids chased badgers’ shadows in the twilight, and I sat there with a glass of local cider, feeling a proper pang of self-reflection. Life at home’s non-stop – work, school runs, the lot – but here, amid the simple stuff like listening to birdsong or baking scones with whatever we rustled up, I realised how much we needed this. No screens, just us lot bickering over the last biscuit and laughing it off. Sure, there was the odd meltdown when someone trod mud through the hall, or the time the toddler declared war on the sofa cushions, but that’s family holidays for you – gloriously messy.

By the time we packed up, reluctantly, I was already plotting our return. Somerset’s got that magic for recharging the batteries, especially in a spot like this. If you’re after uncomplicated joy – wildlife spotting, village wanders, and zero agenda – it’s the ticket. We left with full hearts, filthy boots, and memories that’ll have us smiling through the next rainy week. Proper tonic.
