About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Brean – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Bristol turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through every narrow lane in Somerset like it was auditioning for a rally. Then, just as we hit the coastal stretch, a sudden downpour turned the A38 into a slip-and-slide. My other half was gripping the wheel white-knuckled, kids in the back chanting “Are we there yet?” for the umpteenth time, and I’m fumbling with soggy crisps and a spilt flask of tea. By the time we pulled up outside the holiday let, we were a right state – damp, cranky, and desperately needing a cuppa.

But oh, the anticipation had been building all week. I’d been daydreaming about that classic seaside vibe: sandy toes, fish and chips, the works. And as we hauled our bags up the stairs to this first-floor flat in the heart of Brean village, any lingering grumps melted away. First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those welcoming spots that just hugs you hello – bright, open-plan living space that instantly feels like home. The kitchen’s kitted out with everything you’d need for a self-catering bash: electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge, the lot. We dumped our stuff and cracked open a bottle of fizz right there in the dining area, laughing about our epic journey while the kids claimed the sitting area with its cosy electric fire.

Stepping into the bedrooms sealed the deal – a comfy double for us and a bunk room perfect for the little ones, both done up thoughtfully for a proper kip after beach days. We’d barely unpacked when we wandered out to test the waters, literally. Brean’s beach is just a hop away, that massive stretch of sand backed by dunes, ideal for building wonky castles or just ambling along with an ice cream. The village buzzed with that easy seaside charm – candy-striped beach huts, donkey rides chugging along, and the smell of frying onions from the stalls. We grabbed pasties from a nearby van and scoffed them on the promenade, watching the waves roll in under a clearing sky.

The next morning, after a fry-up whipped up in the kitchen (no disasters, hurrah), we hit Brean Leisure Park, just down the road. Thrilling slides and lazy rivers kept the kids giddy, while I snuck in some gentle people-watching and a quiet reflection. Holidays like this make you realise how daft it is to sweat the small stuff – that mad drive was worth every spluttered laugh. We even mooched over to Brean Down, that chunky headland with cracking views, for a breezy walk. Puffed out but chuffed, we headed back to the flat, fired up the sitting area, and crashed out with board games.

Staying here felt like the perfect seaside reset – close enough to Burnham-on-Sea for a quick arcade fix or donkey-spotting, but Brean’s own little world of sand and sea. If you’re after a fuss-free family escape, this spot’s a gem. We left sunburnt, sandy, and already plotting a return. Proper tonic for the soul.
