About Somerset
I finally made it to Somerset after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all morning—visions of rolling hills, cream teas, and kicking back in a proper holiday let—but then the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past the M5 junction. It kept rerouting me down these tiny lanes that were more pothole than road, and at one point, I ended up in a farmyard staring down a very unimpressed cow. "Cheers for that," I muttered, reversing out with my heart in my mouth. By the time I spotted the property sign, I was half an hour late, sweaty, and questioning my life choices.

Pulling up to this cosy two-bedroom terrace house, though, all that stress melted away like butter on a scone. It's one of those unpretentious spots tucked into Bridgwater, with a welcoming vibe that screams "relax here, you daft northerner." The owners had left the lights on and a little note by the door with directions to the local shop for milk—proper thoughtful, that. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside, it was all warm and lived-in, with a kitchen that had everything you could need for knocking up a fry-up. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window to let in that fresh Somerset air, and just breathed it in. After the drive, it felt like arriving home, only better.

We—me and my other half—wasted no time settling in. A quick wander down to the nearby Blake Museum, just a stone's throw away, had us grinning at the quirky exhibits on local history; who knew Bridgwater had such a wild carnival tradition? Back at the house, we fired up the BBQ in the little courtyard (hidden gem, that—perfect for evening chats with a beer). The first night, we strolled to the river, watched the swans glide by, and popped into a chippy for haddock and mushy peas. Simple joys, but after the arrival farce, it was pure bliss.

Of course, I had a proper moment of self-reflection that evening, sat there with a cuppa, watching the sunset. Here I was, faffing about with maps and cows earlier, when all I needed was to slow down and let Somerset work its magic. It's funny how a bit of holiday chaos reminds you life's too short for sat-nav tantrums. The place exceeded every expectation—comfy beds, spotless everything, and that intangible "ahh" feeling. If you're after a laid-back base for pottering around Sedgemoor, this is it. Can't wait to go back, minus the bovine encounter.
