About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Yeovil, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping down a muddy farm track. We ended up with the car half-stuck in a puddle, laughing like idiots as we dug it out with an old branch. But oh, what a silver lining. Fifteen minutes later, we pulled up to this quaint cottage, forming part of a larger building that can be booked together for bigger groups. Tucked away in glorious Somerset countryside, it felt like stepping into a secret world – all cosy nooks and peaceful vibes that hit me right in the chest with that first proper breath of fresh air.

From the off, I was buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know? Windows flung open to birdsong, a cheeky GandT in hand, plotting lazy days ahead. First impressions? Spot on. The place wrapped around us like a warm hug, with the countryside rolling out endlessly, begging to be explored. But here’s the thing – I’m not one for tourist traps. Give me the hidden gems, the spots you stumble on by accident. And Somerset? It’s a goldmine for getting properly lost.

Day one, we wandered off down a footpath behind the cottage, no map, just vibes. Ended up in a forgotten orchard heavy with windfalls – apples so tart they made your cheeks ache, perfect for a impromptu picnic on a wonky blanket. We picnicked there for hours, me admitting to myself that I’d been glued to my phone back home way too much. This was the reset I didn’t know I needed.

Next morning, a wrong turn on the lanes (they’re like a maze here, every one prettier than the last) led us to a tucked-away nature reserve I’d never heard of. Just a signpost half-hidden by ivy, then bam – wildflower meadows buzzing with butterflies, a pond alive with dragonflies, and not a soul in sight. We lay on the grass, watching clouds drift, feeling like we’d gatecrashed paradise. Lunch was at a blink-and-you-miss-it farm shop a mile away – proper pasties stuffed with local beef, cheese from some nearby dairy that melted like a dream. No queues, no hype, just pure, unfiltered yum.

Afternoon took us deeper into the backroads, chasing a glimpse of a church spire we’d spotted from the cottage. Got lost again (story of my life), but it spat us out at this ancient woodland hollow, carpeted in bluebells even in late summer’s tail end. Sunbeams slicing through the trees, the air thick with that earthy scent – I sat on a log, had a proper moment reflecting on how these accidental finds beat any guidebook itinerary. Back at the cottage, we fired up the barbecue with sausages from that farm shop, stars popping out overhead like they were showing off.

By week’s end, we’d mapped our own quirky Somerset – no big attractions, just those off-the-beaten gems that sneak up on you. Getting lost never felt so right. If you’re after a proper escape, hunt down a spot like this. You won’t regret it.
