We’d barely turned off the M5 when the satnav decided to send us on a wild goose chase through Burnham-on-Sea’s back lanes, convinced our little cottage was hiding behind a row of beach huts. By the time we pulled up outside Greenlawns, the April drizzle had turned the gravel drive into a skating rink and I’d managed to step straight into the only puddle deeper than a paddling pool. My trainers squelched all the way to the door, and my partner couldn’t stop laughing while I tried to shake the worst of the mud off on the mat.

Still, the cottage felt instantly welcoming once we were inside. The owners had left the heating on low, so the living room was properly toasty after our damp arrival, and the big window framed a soft grey sea that looked almost silver in the late-afternoon light. April on this stretch of coast is that funny in-between season: too chilly for paddling yet bright enough that the dunes are already dotted with the first thrift flowers. We unpacked in record time, then wandered the short path to the beach, hoods up, breathing in that clean, salty air that always seems sharper in spring.

Back at Greenlawns we made tea and sat by the window watching the tide creep in. The garden was still mostly bare, but a couple of brave daffodils had pushed through beside the bench, and the low sun picked out every ridge in the sand. It struck me how different this felt from our usual summer trips—quieter, somehow more ours. Without the crowds we could hear the gulls properly, and the wind carried that faint scent of wet seaweed rather than chips. I found myself wondering why we don’t come off-season more often; there’s a gentleness to the place when the days are still stretching out and the evenings draw in early.

Later we strolled into Burnham for fish and chips, the high street almost empty under the streetlamps. The cottage welcomed us back with the same cosy glow, and as I peeled off my still-damp socks I caught myself smiling at how a silly puddle and a bit of April drizzle had set the tone for the whole stay. Sometimes the small mishaps are what make you slow down and notice the season you’re actually in.
