We’d only just pulled off the M5 when the satnav decided we were taking a scenic detour via a farm track that was definitely not built for a family car loaded with buckets, spades and two over-excited children. By the time we bumped back onto tarmac, the postcode had been corrected, but the mood in the back seat had gone from “are we nearly there?” to “can we go home now?” Still, the sun was out and the promise of The Outlook kept us going.

When we finally rolled up the short lane to the cottage, the sea air hit us before the car even stopped. The Outlook sits just a stone’s throw from the beach path, and the moment we stepped out we could hear the soft rush of waves and smell that unmistakable mix of salt and warm sand. The garden gate clicked open with that satisfying garden-gate sound, and there it was: a neat little garden with a picnic table already set for four, and beyond it the low whitewashed walls of the cottage itself. Our eldest immediately claimed the hammock strung between two apple trees, while the youngest made a beeline for the sandpit tucked in the corner—clearly the previous guests had left it ready for exactly this kind of arrival.

Inside, everything felt ready for us. The kitchen table was already laid with a couple of mismatched mugs and a note from the owners pointing out where the local bakery dropped fresh bread if you left the box out overnight. We unpacked in that leisurely holiday way—no rush, just shoes kicked off by the door and the kettle on. From the living-room window you can see the path that leads straight down to the beach, and the children were already negotiating who got to carry the bodyboard on the first trip.

We didn’t go far that first afternoon. Just a short wander along the shingle to stretch our legs and let the kids collect the obligatory handful of shells and driftwood. Back at the cottage we grilled sausages on the little barbecue while the sun dipped behind the low hills. Sitting there with a glass of something cold, watching the children chase each other round the garden in their pyjamas, I caught myself thinking how rarely we manage to slow down like this at home. The satnav mishap already felt like part of the story rather than a proper disaster—just the usual reminder that the best bits of a holiday often start with something going slightly off-script.

Later, once the little ones were asleep, we left the back door open so the evening breeze could drift through. From the sofa you could still hear the sea, steady and unhurried, the same sound that would greet us again in the morning. It struck me, not for the first time, that sometimes the simplest places do the heaviest lifting when it comes to making a family feel properly away.
