About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Minehead last month – what was meant to be a smooth three-hour jaunt from Bristol turned into a comedy of errors. First off, I took a wrong turn near Taunton, thanks to my sat-nav deciding to throw a wobbly and reroute me through some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, halfway there, the heavens opened, turning the M5 into a proper aquaplaning adventure. I gripped the wheel like my life depended on it, muttering to myself about why I hadn’t just taken the train. By the time I spotted the seafront signs for Minehead, I was frazzled, damp, and questioning my life choices.

Pulling up to the holiday property, though, all that stress melted away faster than ice cream on Butlin’s beach. It’s one of those classic seafront flats, all bright and welcoming with a real nod to seaside charm – think cosy vibes that scream “kick back and relax.” I’d been buzzing with anticipation on the approach, imagining lazy afternoons by the waves, but stepping inside? Blimey, it exceeded expectations. The view from the lounge straight out to the Bristol Channel was an absolute showstopper – shimmering water as far as the eye could see, with Porlock Weir just peeking into view on a clear day. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like home from the off, with everything laid out just so: comfy sofas begging for a collapse, a kitchen stocked for bacon butties, and that faint whiff of fresh sea air wafting through the windows.

Of course, the arrival chaos didn’t end at the door. I fumbled the keys twice trying to juggle my bags, then realised I’d left my phone charger in the car – classic me. Stumbling back out into the drizzle for it, I nearly tripped over a cheeky seagull eyeing my crisps. Laughing at myself, I thought, “Right, this is meant to be a holiday, not a blooper reel.” But honestly, it added to the fun. Once settled, I cracked open a cuppa and just soaked it in. That first evening, I wandered down to the beach – a five-minute stroll – dodging the incoming tide and watching families building sandcastles. Minehead’s promenade is pure nostalgia: arcade lights twinkling, fish and chips wafting from the stalls, and the gentle crash of waves that lulls you into holiday mode.

The next morning brought even better first impressions. A short hop to the cliffs, and I was puffing up the path to Greenaleigh Point, lungs bursting but rewarded with panoramic views over the bay. Spotting seals bobbing about was the cherry on top – nature’s own welcome party. Back at the flat, I whipped up lunch with local bits from the shops: Somerset cheddar on fresh bread, washed down with that unbeatable sea breeze. It got me reflecting a bit, sat there on the balcony. Life back home’s all rush and deadlines, but here, with the chaos of arrival behind me, I felt properly reset. No grand epiphanies, just a quiet nod that sometimes the messiest starts lead to the best unwinds.

Staying put in Minehead like this – close to the action without the hassle – was spot on. If you’re after that proper West Somerset escape, you won’t go far wrong. Can’t wait to go back.
