About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Bristol turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that hadn’t seen a car since the war, and just as we hit the A39, the heavens opened. Rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half fiddled with the playlist, insisting on that upbeat folk stuff to “keep spirits high”. Spirits? Mine were drowning. We missed the turning for Bridgwater by a mile, ended up looping back past a sodden field of cows who looked as fed up as us, and arrived at the holiday spot absolutely soaked and sniping at each other like an old married couple. Which, I suppose, we are after 15 years.

But oh, pulling up to that quirky little pod – a cosy, modern hideaway tucked into the edge of the Somerset Levels – everything shifted. The rain eased just enough for us to dash inside, dripping and giggling now, and the first impressions? Magic. It’s one of those off-grid gems, all compact and cleverly designed with a nod to eco-living, sat in its own private nook surrounded by whispering reeds and birdsong. Stepping through the door felt like slipping into a warm hug – fairy lights twinkling, a wood burner already stocked and begging to be lit, and that massive window framing the misty Levels like a living painting. I stood there, towel-drying my hair, thinking, “Blimey, we’ve stumbled into Narnia for adults.”

We wasted no time shaking off the arrival chaos. Brewed a proper cuppa (none of your weak teabag nonsense) and cracked open the complimentary local cider – sharp, tangy stuff from nearby orchards that hit the spot after our ordeal. First evening, we wandered a short stroll to the canal towpath, just a few minutes away, where the rain had cleared to leave everything sparkling. Flat-bottomed barges chugged lazily past, herons stalking the banks, and the air smelled of wet earth and promise. Back at the pod, we fired up the burner, rustled up pasta with whatever we’d crammed in the cool bag, and sprawled on the comfy sofa-bed, watching the sky turn pink then inky black. No light pollution here – stars popped out like someone flicked a switch.

Next morning, anticipation from the night before paid off big time. We hired bikes from a spot down the road in Huntspill and pedalled along those peaceful waterways, spotting kingfishers darting like jewels. Stopped at a farm shop for fresh scones and clotted cream – devoured them messily on a bench, crumbs everywhere, laughing about our soggy arrival. Afternoon was pure bliss: lounging in the pod’s private hot tub (yes, really – bubbling away under a pergola), steaming gently as mist rolled across the fields. I had a proper moment there, feet up, sipping more cider, reflecting on how we’d let the drive mishaps sour the start. Life’s too short for that, innit? This place forced us to slow down, reconnect without the usual distractions.

By checkout, we were plotting a return. Somerset’s Levels have this gentle magic – chaotic arrival and all, it was the perfect reset. If you’re after a bolthole that feels worlds away yet handy for Bridgwater’s pubs, don’t hesitate. Just pack wellies.
