About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – we’d packed the car with enough cheese and biscuits to feed a small army, dreaming of lazy days in the countryside. Me and Sarah, just the two of us for a proper couple’s break, no kids or deadlines in sight. But halfway there, near Bridgwater, the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us down a lane narrower than my waistline after Christmas. We ended up nose-to-nose with a tractor, hearts pounding, laughing like idiots as we reversed for what felt like miles. Classic us – turning a simple journey into a comedy sketch.

By the time we pulled up, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over everything, and honestly, my anticipation melted into pure delight. The cottage was this cosy little gem, all tucked away in a quiet spot with a welcoming, lived-in charm that screamed “kick off your shoes and stay a while.” First impressions? Spot on. We stepped inside, dropped the bags, and cracked open a bottle of local cider from the nearby farm shop – sharp, bubbly perfection.

The next few days blurred into that blissful cottage rhythm we’d been craving. Mornings started slow, with coffee on the patio watching mist lift off the fields, then a wander over to Blake Museum in Bridgwater. It’s just a short hop away, packed with quirky tales of the town’s gunpowder days – we spent ages giggling over the old smuggling stories, pretending we were daring rogues ourselves. Lunch was picnic-style by the River Parrett, feet dangling in the cool water, sandwiches a bit squished from the car chaos but tasting like heaven.

Afternoons were for proper unwinding. We pottered around the garden, picking a few herbs for dinner (Sarah’s a whizz with a makeshift pesto), and one evening we even fired up the barbecue for sausages from the butcher’s in town – charred just right, with that smoky scent drifting everywhere. There was a hilarious moment when I tried “helping” with the washing-up and flooded the kitchen floor; Sarah just handed me a mop with a wink, saying, “You’re a holiday hero in your dreams, love.” Cottage life chaos at its finest – soggy socks and all.

We ventured out to Westonzoyland a couple of times, that peaceful village vibe drawing us in for cream teas at a tiny café. Scones piled high with clotted cream and jam, proper West Country style – I demolished mine so fast Sarah had to guard hers. Evenings back at the cottage meant board games by lamplight, a cheeky GandT, and stargazing from the garden, marvelling at skies clearer than city smog ever allows.

Looking back, it was those simple pleasures that hit home – no grand plans, just us reconnecting amid the gentle hum of Somerset life. I caught myself one quiet morning, tea in hand, thinking how we rush about back home, forgetting this kind of peace. A gentle nudge to do it more often, really. If you’re after a relaxed escape, this corner of Sedgemoor’s got it in spades – we’re already plotting our return.
