About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Somerset – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from Bristol turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my hopeless sat-nav skills. Picture this: me, squinting at the screen while my partner, Sarah, clutches the map like it’s the last chocolate biscuit at a WI meeting. We missed the turning for Wedmore by a good five minutes, ended up on some narrow lane that felt like it was auditioning for a horror film, and then – get this – the car decided to throw a hissy fit with a flat tyre just as the Levels came into view. Cue us both out in the drizzle, wrestling with the spare wheel, me covered in mud and swearing under my breath (well, almost). By the time we’d sorted it, we were late, frazzled, and I was questioning why we hadn’t just stayed home with a cuppa and Strictly.

But oh, pulling up to this luxurious lodge just a mile outside Wedmore? All that chaos melted away like clotted cream on a scone. Tucked amidst the open countryside, it’s one of four identical spots, all gazing idyllically over the Somerset Levels with these spectacular views of Glastonbury Tor poking up like a mystical finger in the distance. We’d been buzzing with anticipation on the journey – imagining lazy mornings with coffee in hand, watching the mist roll off the fields – but the reality hit even better. Stepping inside, the open-plan living area just wrapped us up in its cosy arms: a fully fitted kitchen gleaming and ready for action, light pouring in from those massive bi-folding doors that make the outdoors feel like an extra room. We dumped our bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider (grabbed from the village shop on the way, post-tyre drama), and flopped at the dining table, still giggling about our arrival farce.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant – sorry, I mean spot on. That patio furniture beckoned us out straight away for a late lunch, with the countryside stretching out like a painting you never want to leave. We tucked into cheese ploughman’s I rustled up from the fridge goodies, the Tor standing sentinel as the sun finally broke through. It was one of those moments where you catch yourself thinking, “Blimey, we needed this.” Life’s been a whirl lately – work piling up, kids’ school runs – and here we were, finally switching off amid the peace of it all. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd cow mooing in the field below.

We didn’t venture far that first evening – why would you, with views like that? A gentle stroll along the nearby paths towards the Levels, breathing in that fresh air, then back for a barbecue as the light faded. The lodge felt like our little haven, perfect for families or couples like us craving a tranquil escape. Reflecting now, that mishap of a journey was the best icebreaker; it made arriving feel like winning the lottery. Somerset’s got that magic – and this spot? It’s got it in spades. Can’t wait to go back, minus the puncture next time.
