About Somerset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Minehead last month – what should’ve been a straightforward motorway hop from Bristol turned into a comedy of errors when I took a wrong turn near Bridgwater and ended up in some back lane that my sat-nav swore was a shortcut. Turns out it was more of a scenic detour through hedges so tall they scraped the roof bars, and I arrived with the car looking like it’d been on a safari. Still, as I pulled up to this cosy little holiday cottage – a proper quaint two-bedroom number tucked away in a quiet spot – all that stress melted away. The first glimpse was pure magic: flower baskets spilling over the doorstep, sea air wafting in, and that classic West Somerset welcome of rolling hills meeting the coast. I was buzzing with anticipation, thinking, right, this is where I unplug and let the adventures unfold.

The plan was loose – no big itineraries, just wander and see what Somerset magic pops up. And boy, did getting lost pay off. First afternoon, I headed out for a casual stroll along the coast path, but instead of sticking to the main drag, I veered off down a unmarked track that looked promising. Ended up at this hidden pebble beach you’d never spot on a map app – just me, the waves lapping at driftwood, and a seal bobbing about like it owned the place. Laughed out loud when I realised I’d been there an hour without another soul in sight. Proper hidden gem, that one, perfect for skimmin’ stones and pondering life’s little detours.

Next day, I grabbed my boots for a hike up the wooded valleys behind Minehead. Missed a signpost (story of my life) and stumbled into a lush little gorge with a babbling stream and wild garlic everywhere – the air was thick with that garlicky scent. Found a rickety old bench overlooking a waterfall that must’ve been a locals’ secret, judging by the lack of litter or Instagram vibes. Picnicked there with cheese from the village shop and a flask of tea, feeling like I’d cracked some code to Somerset’s soul. It got me reflecting, you know? Back home, I’m always rushing, glued to screens, but getting properly lost out here forced me to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the quiet wins. Made me wonder why I don’t do it more often.

Evenings were bliss – firing up the barbecue on the patio, watching the sun dip over the Bristol Channel. One night, a wrong turn on the way back from the pub led me to this tucked-away clifftop viewpoint, stars popping out like someone flicked a switch. No crowds, no fuss, just pure, unfiltered peace. Wandered back chuffed, vowing to return. Somerset’s got this knack for rewarding the wanderers – those off-the-beaten-path finds that make you feel like you’ve nicked a bit of paradise for yourself. If you’re after a holiday that’s more serendipity than schedule, this corner’s your spot. Can’t recommend ditching the map enough.
