About St Ives
I’ll never forget the drive down to St Ives – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in the pouring rain up in Bristol, kids bickering in the back, me navigating via a phone that kept losing signal through Dartmoor. Then, just past Redruth, disaster struck: a wrong turn onto one of those impossibly narrow Cornish lanes. We ended up wedged between a hedge and a passing tractor, hearts pounding as I reversed like a maniac while my other half yelled directions from the passenger seat. “You’ve got this, love!” she said, which was code for ‘I’m panicking too’. Twenty sweaty minutes later, we emerged, laughing hysterically, and spotted the sea glinting ahead. Carbis Bay was calling, and suddenly all was forgiven.

Pulling up to the holiday let, I felt that proper buzz of anticipation – you know, the one where you imagine kicking back with a cuppa, feet up, woes forgotten. It’s a sleek beachside spot, tastefully furnished and finished to a high standard throughout, with a light and airy open-plan living space designed to make the most of its stunning seaside setting. Large windows and sliding doors frame wide sea views while filling the room with natural light, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere ideal for both entertaining and unwinding after a day by the coast. We tumbled in, bags everywhere, and it hit me straight away: this place was a dream. The views over the bay were jaw-dropping – Porthkidney Sands stretching out like a golden invitation, waves crashing just below. Sunlight poured in, bouncing off the sea, and I stood there gobsmacked, kids already glued to the glass cooing at the surfers.

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped our stuff and headed straight out – no faffing about unpacking properly. A quick wander down to the beach revealed Carbis Bay in all its glory: soft sand, gentle waves perfect for paddling, and not too crowded even in peak season. The kids built epic sandcastles while we grabbed fish and chips from a nearby spot, scoffing them on the beach with gritty fingers and seagull dodges. Hilarious moment when one cheeky bird swooped for my last chip – I flailed like a windmill, drawing stares from proper locals walking their dogs. Back at the house, sliding those doors open let the salty breeze flood in, turning supper into a proper feast with the sound of the tide as our soundtrack.

It got me reflecting, though, as the sun dipped low over the bay. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, school runs, the usual grind. Here, staring out at that endless sea, I realised how rare it is to just... breathe. No signals needed, just us lot together, mishaps and all. We pottered to St Ives the next morning – a ten-minute train ride from right by the property, past cliffs and coves – for pasties at Porthminster and a mooch around the harbour, artists’ galleries catching the light just so. But honestly, the real magic was that first chaotic arrival flipping into pure bliss. If you’re after a spot that nails the seaside escape, this corner of Cornwall’s got it in spades. Can’t wait to go back – next time, with a better sat-nav.
