About St Ives
The drive down to St Ives was meant to be a breeze, but of course, we hit a classic Cornish roadworks snag just past Penzance – one of those moments where you're stuck behind a lorry loaded with pasties, wondering if you'll ever arrive. The kids were chanting "are we there yet?" from the back seat, and I was nursing a lukewarm coffee, but as we crested the hill and caught that first glimpse of the harbour twinkling below, all was forgiven. St Ives never fails to spark that little flutter of excitement, doesn't it? Like unwrapping a present you know you'll love.

Pulling into the Tregenna Castle Resort felt like stumbling into a secret garden high above the town. Our three-bedroom duplex apartment, spread across two floors, blended family comforts with a touch of seaside luxury – think plush sofas for sprawling out and a kitchen big enough for midnight snack raids. The views over the lush gardens were an instant mood-lifter, all green and inviting, with the sea air wafting in through the windows. No wonder we dumped the bags and headed straight out to explore the 72-acre grounds. There's something magical about wandering those paths, dodging the odd cheeky squirrel, and finding a bench to just breathe it all in.

First morning, we ambled down into St Ives proper – it's only a short stroll, and the hill works up an appetite for cream teas. Porthmeor Beach was calling, with its golden sands and surfers riding the waves like pros. The little ones built epic sandcastles while I pretended to help, mostly just getting sand in my sandwiches. Lunch at a harbourside café was chips with a sea view, the kind of simple joy that makes you forget about emails back home. Afternoon brought a gentle potter around the Barbara Hepworth Museum – her sculptures in that subtropical garden felt like a whisper of calm amid our happy chaos.

Back at the apartment, cottage life kicked in proper. Cooking spag bol turned into a flour-flinging frenzy (note to self: never let a five-year-old near the pasta sauce), but eating it on the balcony with the sun dipping over the harbour was pure bliss. Evenings were for resort rambles – the gardens are dotted with spots to unwind, watching the town lights flicker on. One night, we played board games till the kids conked out, and I sat there with a cuppa, reflecting on how these messy, joyful bits are what recharge the batteries. Who needs fancy spas when you've got sea breezes and family giggles?

A gentle mishap on the last day – toddler tantrum over leaving the beach – reminded me holidays are as much about the wobbles as the wonders. But St Ives, from our hilltop perch, wrapped us in that relaxed Cornish hug. If you're after a family break full of sand, scones, and zero pretension, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back.
