About St Ives
We couldn’t wait to hit the ground running, lacing up our boots for the coastal path from Carbis Bay straight into St Ives. The anticipation was buzzing – visions of Porthminster Beach picnics and ice creams from the harbour. But oh, British weather, you cheeky devil. Day one dawned bright and blustery, perfect for the hike up to Clodgy Point. The path winds along cliffs with jaw-dropping views of the turquoise sea crashing below, gulls wheeling overhead. We puffed along, dodging the odd puddle, stopping to marvel at the seals basking on the rocks. Lunch was pasties scoffed on a bench, crumbs flying in the wind. Pure bliss. Come afternoon, the fog rolled in thick as clotted cream, turning our planned amble to Porthkidney Sands into a comedy of errors. Visibility? Zero. We groped our way back, giggling like kids, using the sound of waves as our guide. “This is why we pack waterproofs,” I quipped to my mate, who’d optimistically left his at the cottage. Back indoors, we brewed tea and chuckled over the mishap – a gentle reminder that sometimes the best adventures are the unplanned ones. Me? I secretly love how it forces you to slow down, breathe in the salty air, and appreciate the wildness. Next day, the weather flipped again – glorious sunshine for the stroll to Carbis Bay Beach itself. That short walk from the cottage is a gem: through quiet lanes, past blooming hydrangeas, emerging onto soft sands where the tide pools sparkle. We wandered for hours, skimbling over rocks, the sun warming our faces. But by evening, a squall hit, so we pivoted to the cliff path towards St Ives town, umbrellas up, rain drumming a rhythm. The harbour lights twinkled through the downpour, fishing boats bobbing – magical, in a soggy sort of way. Our last hike was a loop back via the bay, weather holding just long enough for one final beach dawdle. Reflecting on it now, those shifting skies made the walks unforgettable – no two days the same, each forcing a bit of adaptability. St Ives has that knack for turning weather woes into highlights. If you’re after a spot for proper leg-stretching adventures with a side of Cornish charm, you won’t go far wrong round here. We left knackered, windswept, and already plotting a return. |
