About St Ives
We'd been dreaming of St Ives for months, that perfect Cornish escape with the kids clamouring for beach days and pasties. The drive down from Bristol was mostly a breeze, windows down, singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist, until we hit a classic Cornish roadworks snarl-up just past Hayle. There I was, faffing with the satnav while the little ones bickered over crisps in the back—cue one minor meltdown involving a spilled juice carton and me muttering about needing a holiday before we even arrived. But as we crested the hill into St Ives, the sun breaking through the clouds over Porthminster Beach, all that faded. The sea sparkled like it was showing off just for us, and my heart did a little flip. This was it.

Pulling into the allocated parking spot was a relief—no circling like sharks for a space, which is a miracle in this town. From the rear courtyard, we lugged our bags up the internal stairs from our private entrance, the kids racing ahead with that boundless energy. Stepping into the light and airy open-concept living area felt like a hug from the sea itself—ocean hues on the walls, tasteful artwork everywhere, and those plush sofas begging us to flop down. It's a stylishly converted duplex apartment on the second and third floors of what used to be the old Chy Albany hotel, split-level with three bedrooms for up to six, spot-on for our family crew. The well-equipped kitchen had everything for knocking up a feast, and we wasted no time raiding the cupboards for tea and biscuits while gazing out at the beach below.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant—sorry, cracking, I mean. Waking up to that view the next morning, waves crashing right there, we felt like we'd won the lottery. No frantic schedules, just proper relaxed family time. Mornings started with brekkie at the dining table, the boys arguing over who got the last bit of toast, then we'd wander down to Porthminster for sandcastles and paddling in the shallows. The beach is a stunner, soft sand and that vivid blue water, and it's literally on the doorstep—no car faff needed. We'd grab fish and chips from Porthmeor Beach later, scoffing them on the harbour wall while watching the boats bob about, the kids' faces smeared with ketchup. Pure chaos, but the good kind—the sort that makes you laugh till your sides ache.

Afternoons were for pottering around town, nipping into little galleries on Fore Street or treating ourselves to a cream tea at a café tucked away off the high street. One day we even managed a gentle stroll along the coastal path to Bamford's Cove, spotting seals lazing on the rocks—magic for wide-eyed little ones. Back at the flat, evenings were cosy: board games on the sofas (Monopoly turning into a hilarious row, naturally), or me sneaking a glass of wine while the hubby wrestled bedtime stories. It's those simple pleasures—the salt in the air, the sound of gulls, the joy of not cooking on a proper hob—that make it.

Looking back, amid the sandy towels and half-eaten pasties strewn about, I had a quiet moment on the balcony one sunset. Us lot, bickering and loving it all, reminded me life's too short for anything but these messy, sun-soaked breaks. St Ives worked its charm, leaving us recharged and already plotting the next trip. If you're after that idyllic coastal vibe for family or mates, you can't go wrong here.
