About St Ives
I finally made it to St Ives after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Devon. We'd set off full of beans, me behind the wheel with the missus navigating on her phone, kids in the back hyped up on Haribo. But oh no, about an hour in, disaster struck – the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and rerouted us down every narrow Cornish lane imaginable. We're talking hedges scraping the sides of the car, a tractor blocking the way that wouldn't budge, and me sweating like a porker at a barbecue while trying not to snap at the family. By the time we neared Carbis Bay, I was ready to trade the lot for a tent on the moors. Still, as we crested that hill with the sea sparkling below, all that anticipation bubbled up – St Ives has this magic, doesn't it? Those turquoise waves and white cottages clinging to the cliffs. I could already taste the pasties.

Pulling into the car park at Sands Apartments, hearts racing from the near-miss with a rogue seagull dive-bombing the windscreen, we tumbled out, bags everywhere, kids dashing about like escaped puppies. Ground floor, two-bedroom job – perfect for us lot, no stairs to lug suitcases up, thank goodness. Flinging open the door, we were hit with this instant wow: floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the open-plan living space with light, and right there, the sea view from the dining area. It's got that seaside vibe spot on – local art on the walls, subtle mood lighting you can tweak for a cosy evening in. Plonked ourselves on the two- and three-seater sofas, flicked on the telly with the Sky package, and exhaled. Proper luxury without the fuss.

The dining spot's a gem, glass table with dark grey leather chairs, staring straight out at the bay. Kitchen's a dream too – all sleek with soft-close drawers, loads of workspace, and a breakfast bar with stools where I perched later, chinwagging while the wife whipped up spag bol. We'd planned a romantic retreat, but with the kids, it's more family frenzy – though those views make you forget the madness. First impressions? Blown away. After the drive's palaver, it felt like sinking into a hug from an old mate.

We didn't waste time – straight out to Carbis Bay beach, just a hop away, buckets and spades in tow. Kids built epic sandcastles while we paddled in the shallows, the water bracing but brilliant. Next morning, hopped on the scenic railway to St Ives, chugging along the cliffs with views that make your jaw drop. Wandered Porthmeor Beach, grabbed fish and chips from a proper chippie, watched surfers tackling the waves. Even squeezed in a cliffside walk back, puffing a bit but grinning at the wildflowers and gulls wheeling overhead. One evening, we stayed in, me fumbling a 'gourmet' pizza on the breakfast bar, kids glued to CBeebies – pure bliss.

Reflecting on it now, that bumpy arrival was a right laugh in hindsight. Taught me not to pack quite so much (who needs three pairs of wellies?), and how these little escapes recharge the batteries. St Ives from this base? Spot on for families or just us two another time. Already plotting the return – minus the sat-nav sabotage.
