About St Ives
The drive down to St Ives was meant to be a breeze, but of course, we hit a classic Cornish roadblock – a tractor trundling along at snail's pace just as the lanes narrowed into those twisty coastal paths. Me, swearing under my breath (well, quietly, with the kids in the back), while my other half tried to make light of it with some dodgy dad jokes. By the time we crested the hill and spotted the sea sparkling below, though, all was forgiven. That first glimpse of St Ives, with its jumble of whitewashed cottages tumbling down to the beach, had us grinning like idiots. We'd made it, and the anticipation bubbled up – was this place going to live up to the photos?

Pulling up to our holiday apartment, we were chuffed to bits. Cool and contemporary, it had split levels and high ceilings that let light flood in from every angle, making it feel like a proper airy haven for unwinding. Understated and stylish, there were spots to all pile in together and little nooks to sneak off to when the chaos got too much. The gadgets were a godsend too – two Smart TVs with Netflix, an Alexa belting out tunes, a top-notch Bluetooth Bose speaker, and even a Nintendo Wii with games stacked up. Perfect for those inevitable drizzly afternoons when you'd rather stay in than battle the wind.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out for Porthmeor Beach, just a short stroll away. The kids were straight into the waves, building epic sandcastles that inevitably collapsed into soggy heaps – classic cottage life chaos, but the kind that makes you laugh rather than cry. I joined in, getting absolutely soaked, while we munched on fish and chips from a beachside van, the vinegar tang mixing with salty sea air. Later, we wandered up to the Barbara Hepworth Museum, her sculptures catching the light just so, and it was one of those quiet moments where you think, "Blimey, this is what holidays are for – slowing down a bit."

Evenings were pure bliss. We'd cook up simple suppers in the kitchen – pasta one night, a cheat's curry the next – then sprawl out with a film on Netflix, the Alexa playing our playlist softly. One rainy spell had us firing up the Wii for a Mario Kart tournament; the littlest one thrashed us all, cackling with glee. I had a gentle wobble one morning, staring out at the harbour while sipping tea, reflecting on how these mad, messy family trips remind you that perfection's overrated. It's the sand in the bedsheets, the shared giggles over burnt toast, that stick with you.

A wander to Carbis Bay for a cream tea – scones still warm, jam and clotted cream debated fiercely – rounded off our days perfectly. St Ives wrapped us in that relaxed family vibe, all simple pleasures and zero pretension. We left knackered but buzzing, already plotting a return. If you're after a laid-back Cornish escape, this is the spot.
