About St Ives
I’ll never forget the drive down to St Ives – a proper British road trip, innit? We piled into the car from up country, me navigating with my phone while my other half drove, blasting some classic tunes to keep the spirits high. About halfway there, disaster struck: a massive downpour turned the A30 into a snaking river, and we ended up stuck behind a lorry spraying water everywhere. I was convinced we’d miss check-in, but after a cheeky detour through some winding lanes, we rolled into town just as the sun peeked out. That first glimpse of the sea had me grinning like a kid – anticipation bubbling up as we spotted the place, a spacious two-bedroom maisonette perched brilliantly for exploring the beaches and attractions, with these jaw-dropping views over the bay. Perfect for us lot, whether it’s family jaunts or a cosy couple’s escape.

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and stepped onto the balcony to take in that sparkling bay. The weather was holding – blue skies, a gentle breeze – so we laced up our boots for an immediate wander. St Ives is made for walking, and we headed straight for Porthminster Beach, just a short stroll away. The path hugs the cliffs, with gorse buzzing with bees and the odd seagull eyeing us suspiciously. We paddled in the shallows, laughing as the chilly waves nipped at our toes. “This is paradise,” I said, already plotting tomorrow’s hike.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a mind of its own. Next morning, we woke to grey skies and a mizzle that turned into proper rain by brekkie. No point fighting it; we rugged up in waterproofs and hit the South West Coast Path anyway. That’s the joy of being so handily placed – the trail’s right on your doorstep. We trudged up to Clodgy Point, the wind whipping our faces, but the views through the mist were dramatic: crashing waves below, seals popping up like cheeky locals saying hello. I slipped once on a slick rock, arms flailing comically – “Graceful as ever!” my partner quipped. We sheltered in a cove, sharing soggy sandwiches, feeling alive in that raw, elemental way.

By afternoon, the clouds parted like a miracle, so we dashed to Porthmeor Beach for a sun-soaked amble. The tide was out, revealing rock pools teeming with crabs – we spent ages poking about like excited kids. Another day, brighter forecast, we tackled the loop to Carbis Bay, dodging puddles from overnight showers but rewarded with panoramic sweeps of the coastline. The weather kept us on our toes: one minute lashing rain forcing a pub pitstop for a warming pint (alcoholic or otherwise), the next golden hour lighting up the harbour.

Looking back, those walkies in the ever-changing Cornish clime were the highlight. Sure, I grumbled when the heavens opened, but it made the sunny spells sweeter. Taught me a bit about rolling with it – life’s too short for soggy socks and regrets. If you’re after a base for proper adventures on foot, with bay views to boot, you can’t go wrong here. We left fitter, windswept, and utterly smitten.
