About St Ives
I’ll never forget the drive down to St Ives – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. We’d piled into the car in Bristol, full of excitement for a week by the sea, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some dodgy B-road that turned into a single-track nightmare. Branches scraping the roof, my other half white-knuckling the wheel, and me pretending I wasn’t panicking while secretly wondering if we’d end up in a hedge. But then, just as we crested the hill into Carbis Bay, there it was: this cracking two-bedroom semi-detached villa perched on the seaward side, overlooking the bay like it owned the place. First impressions? Bloody stunning – sea views from the upstairs lounge through those massive sliding doors, and a private hot tub on the balcony that had us grinning like idiots before we’d even unpacked.

No sooner had we hauled our bags in than we wandered down to Carbis Bay Beach, all golden sand and that crisp sea air. That’s where we met Madge, the local lifeguard with a voice like a foghorn and stories to match. She was in her element, barking orders at a gaggle of kids building sandcastles the size of houses. “You lot from upcountry?” she asked, eyeing our pasty accents. Turned out she’d been patrolling these shores for 30 years, and over a chat by the water’s edge, she regaled us with tales of the time a seal nicked a swimmer’s flip-flop and paraded it like a trophy. “Cheeky blighters, they are,” she cackled. We laughed till our sides hurt, and she even tipped us off on the best pasty spot in St Ives – proper insider knowledge.

The next day, we hopped the scenic railway into town, puffing along the cliffs with views that make your jaw drop. St Ives was buzzing, all cobbled streets and harbour vibes, and that’s when we bumped into Tommy, the fisherman-turned-gallery-owner. He was outside his tiny boutique shop, mending nets and chatting to anyone who’d listen. “Fancy a proper Cornish welcome?” he grinned, thrusting a cuppa into my hand. Over the next hour, as we browsed his prints of the bay (inspired by the Hepworth vibes, naturally), he spun yarns about the artists who flocked here back in the day – one chap who painted hungover after too many pints at the Sloop. Tommy’s got this twinkly eye and a laugh that echoes off the harbour walls; he even reckoned our villa’s hot tub was “the best seat in Cornwall for watching the sun dip.” We soaked in it that evening, bubbles and bay views, toasting to quirky locals like him.

Further chats came thick and fast. There was Elderly Dave on the South West Coast Path, puffing along with his dog, who stopped for a natter about spotting dolphins from our exact balcony spot. “You’re living the dream, mate,” he wheezed, before sharing a flask of tea that tasted like victory. And back at the villa, the neighbour – a retired artist called Elsie – popped over with scones, regaling us with gossip about St Ives’ “art mafia” and their endless gallery rivalries. Her stories had us in stitches, proper fly-on-the-wall stuff.

Looking back, it wasn’t just the views or the walks that made it – it was these characters, breathing life into the place. I’m usually a city sort, rushing about, but chatting with Madge, Tommy and the rest slowed me right down, reminded me holidays are for proper human connection. If you’re after a base like this – short stroll to the beach, railway, and path – with sea from every angle, go on, book it. You might just meet your own band of Cornish legends.
